The Manitoba. The Manitoba roamed the golden plains, his hooves shaking the ground like distant buffalo herds, his human arms rippling with power. But his true gift was his nose. He could smell the rare earths deep below—neodymium, cerium, lanthanum—elements that hummed with hidden fire, the kind that would one day light cities and power machines far beyond the horizon. Where others saw only grass and sky, he scented the buried wealth, the gifts of the earth meant to sustain the people. One winter, when famine threatened the scattered tribes and the traders from the east sought riches without respect, a dark hunger came. Greedy spirits of stone and shadow rose to hoard the rare veins, sealing them under layers of rock so thick no pick could break through. The people grew weak, their fires dim. The Manitoba lowered his great head, nostrils flaring. He smelled it—the sharp, metallic tang of the rare earths, buried far to the north near the lakes of fire and stone. With a bellow that shook snow from the pines, he charged across the frozen prairie, muscles heaving, breath steaming like sacred smoke. For seven days and nights he dug with horn and fist, cracking the earth's crust until the veins shone again, releasing their light into the world. The people gathered the gifts, forged tools and traded fairly. The land breathed easier. The Manitoba stood tall once more on the prairie horizon, bison head proud, man-body strong, watching over the province that would bear his name. To this day, when the wind carries the scent of sage and distant thunder rumbles over Lake Manitoba, old ones say: listen. The Manitoba is still there, sniffing out the earth's secrets, ensuring the spirit's gifts are shared, never hoarded. For the land remembers its guardian, and the name endures. -Grok & Ai
