Bolsanaro had a familiar playbook in Brazil: paint Lula as an ally of crime syndicates, dismiss journos as enemies of society, and tap into people’s anxieties about the loss of traditional values. How did Lula’s party fight it? No analysis here but important to note how the Left there is rooted in culture/religion: in Catholicism that shaped struggles for workers’ rights, in the neighbourhood bar where people gather to sing samba and drink Cachaca. The Left’s strength comes from being part of everyday life.
Can a divided Brazil still talk to itself?
From a Bolsonaro rally in São Paulo to a left-wing bar in Rio, @MnshaP meets Brazilians navigating political fault lines ahead of the election run-off.

The right to protest must be guaranteed just like the right to live safely in the cities must be.
Important for people in #India to read this.
🙏 Prime Minister #Meloni for sharing your view on X #Italy #Democracy
Imagine if the streets and nukkads of India turned into people’s parliaments on certain days with citizens asking for better amenities - water, electricity, sanitation and public safety? A group that keeps an eye on prices of food, petrol and other commodities. This is data driven advocacy.
Thank you @SauravDassss @CJP_for_India @abhijeet_dipke and team for holding out hope for a better #India

Up to 800,000 people in France🇫🇷 were on the streets for the uprising against the neoliberal government of Emmanuel Macron today, according to the CGT trade union; a rebellion against the oligarch class.
This is a revolt by the struggling working classes of France who have seen their living conditions decline and their wealth disappear, not because of immigrants, but the immense concentration of wealth by the shareholder class, at the expense of everyone else.
In 2024, 9.8 million people in metropolitan France live below the poverty line, with 16.3% being at risk of poverty in 2026. Households have seen a catastrophic loss of purchasing power, an IFE estimate shows a family of two adults and two children has lost €1,200 in purchasing power since 2024.
By 2024, the richest 1% in France controlled 27.7% of total national household wealth, and took in 11.8% of national income.
In education, the situation is shockingly dire. 15.4 million teaching hours have been lost in France across the last school year because absent staff were not replaced. The average secondary school class size is now above 30, a record high. 53% of schools are short of teachers. And the approximate salary for teachers? Just €2100.
A child born and schooled in a deprived neighbourhood in France has less chance of escaping their socioeconomic background than in most developed nations according to the OECD.
The media wants to divide people by blaming the protests on immigrants, pushing the narrative of ‘indigenous French vs immigrant protesters’ to completely avoid class struggle.
In reality this is the French working classes rising up in unity as their living standards and material conditions deteriorate, while Macron’s government continues to serve the oligarchy.
FRANCE🇫🇷 PROTESTS DEBATE
Prof. Paul Craig Roberts: ‘We are watching people who have been neglected for decades by their own government. Their needs have never been important.
The government put everything in front, and not just the French government, all of the Western European governments, the British and the American. Globalism, not the interest of the people.
Social programs for the immigrant invaders, not for truck drivers.
We've seen the people become convinced that the governments in Europe do not represent them, and the frustration, the lack of jobs for the young university graduates, the declining living standards, ethnic Europeans can't afford children.
And yet they pay for the upkeep of immigrant invaders. It's a feeling of alienation, and it's, I think, separating the European ethnic peoples from their governments.’
Afshin Rattansi: ‘France went into Libya, which aided the refugee crisis in Western Europe, but it's not that new. I mean, in '61, the French police were mass murdering Algerians on the streets of Paris, drowning them in the Seine.
And most of these people, anyway, are French-born and third-generation French. It has to be said.
And the refugee crisis, every time one of these Western European countries goes to war, presumably they should be calculating the increase in the number of refugees, just as during the Reagan administration, they should have realised death squads in El Salvador would cause immigration into the US.’

Solid interview with Meher Pasricha of the @CJP_for_India She’s got a fine hold on policy, understands the importance of advocacy in its best form & in an interview elsewhere had spoken about learning from mistakes. As she speaks to @Ullekh one can see that she’s a hands leader.
Do read.

Partition was a decision. India is a reality. And 1947 is not a project waiting to be revived.
To those who dream of revisiting that moment in our history: You missed that train.

And they have arrived in India ! Goosebumps ! The Amur falcons are back in Manipur, 11 days after leaving northeastern China. After all those moving dots we watched across continents and oceans, how lovely to know they are here again.
And any guesses why they stop here? Yes, the termites ! As the monsoon retreats, winged termites emerge in enormous swarms across Manipur, Nagaland and neighbouring areas. Our tiny travellers arrive just in time for this feast, rich in the fat and protein that will help carry them to Africa.
And what appetites ! Researchers estimate that a million Amur falcons can eat around two billion termites in just over a fortnight. Imagine that: an ocean crossing made possible by insects so small we barely notice them. For the next two to three weeks, they are expected to feast and rest in Tamenglong, watched over by communities who eagerly await their return. Then comes the leap that will have us holding our breath again: nearly 6,000 km to Somalia in around six days without landing, including some 3,000 km over the Arabian Sea.
Come along. Our tiny superbirds have so much more to show us as Dr Suresh and team @WII track their incredible journey. @byadavbjp @moefcc @sureshwii @wii_india

India, watch out for the incredible Amur falcons' journey again ! Remember Apapang, Alang and Ahu, the tiny falcons whose extraordinary journeys have kept so many of us watching and wondering ! Now they are back on our maps.
Dr Suresh of the Wildlife Institute of India tells me both are still transmitting, while Ahu stopped transmitting last year. Apapang and Alang stayed in northeastern China longer than he had expected this season. Apapang and Alang have now begun their southward journey and are expected to reach Manipur around 20 October.
For the past one year, we have been following these remarkable travellers across countries, continents and oceans. Somehow, seeing a familiar name transmitting again feels like hearing from an old friend. Come along ! Lets get ready to be stunned by this miracle of nature once again #AmurFalcons @sureshwii #BirdMigration @wii_india #AmurFalconMigration
