From 34,000 feet over Greenland, congratulations to Francis Halzen and IceCube. A fine choice by the Nobel Committee! I look forward to many more superb results and some off-scale surprises. And kudos to the National Science Foundation as we have known it for enlightened support!

I am sad to report that the formidable Ken Lane (BU), has died. Ken made many notable contributions, among them work on the Cornell charmonium model, dynamical symmetry breaking in the form of extended technicolor, and supercollider physics. He shared the 2011 Sakurai Prize. RIP.

My favorite book in high school was actually a four-volume set of books called "The World of Mathematics." My parents (neither of whom went to college) gave it to me as a present more than 50 years ago.
