He hadn’t been blind to the way some of them treated the poor man, and Chris could do nothing but try and intervene. He didn’t care whether he himself became the target of such a mockery (even though they all doubted it), he would have showed up to Brad’s house for his birthday.

Chris had spent the last few days discussing cake arrangements with the owner of a shop he had been recommended. Brad’s birthday was coming up, and the date had long been scribbled down into the pointman’s journal, in a section dedicated to special occasions.
But he had promised himself that he wouldn’t have ruined it. He had prepared everything: a gift he had (poorly) wrapped himself at midnight, a cake he had spent days deciding the flavour of, even a few balloons and two cold beers for them to enjoy. He had it all.
The moment the days stretched out, leading up to the big event, the young man struggled to contain an enthusiastic grin each time his coworker passed by. He had never been great at keeping secrets, and when it came to surprises, it was even harder for him not to start talking.

“So is it official now?”
Chris had noticed that Leon’s head had been all over the place ever since their mission started. He had grown used to the agent’s questionable jokes, but that day, the younger man had decided to be quieter than usual.
And Chris? The stern captain was more pleasant than ever to witness such a scene. He didn’t need to hit the younger man with a mocking remark about paying attention to the task at hand, because nothing motivated a person better than love itself.

But that was something that could be fixed with a bit more confidence and a supportive external hand.
“You worry too much, but you’re doing it correctly. And frankly? It takes a lot to master such a skill. Trust me, I know. You should be proud of yourself.”
Chris stood close by, his body relaxed as he took in the sight before him. Seeing someone go through a perfect working out routine had always been pleasant for him, especially when they realised that they actually had it in them to achieve such a result.
“You’re doing great, man.”
Chris’ words, surprisingly to the both of them, carried no hint of real shock. He knew that Brad could it. All it took was one glance at his muffled determination emanating from his skin, and he knew that he was about to offer him a good performance.
