A European diplomat expressed deep scepticism that economic deals were sufficient to persuade Putin to end the war in Ukraine. “It’s not about money,” they said. “It’s about humiliation and control.” 🎯

Breaking news: The US and Russia are discussing a potential return by American companies to the Russian oil market as part of wider talks to end Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine ft.trib.al/4gZrY6H
The current discussions build on proposals Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner discussed with Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s special economic envoy, during talks over a Ukraine peace plan late last year. Dmitriev estimated the potential projects’ value at $14bn in February.
That push ultimately stalled shortly afterwards, as Ukraine resisted Russian demands to make territorial concessions as a precondition for talks.
“Dmitriev’s plan was waiting until the war froze, but the clock is ticking and war is not stopping, so they have made a decision to move forward now,” one person briefed on the business deals said.

My understanding from Ukrainian authorities and those involved, as of now, is that there will likely be no direct evacuation of Oleshky residents from the east bank to the west bank of the Dnipro — which is to say from occupied territory directly to Ukrainian-controlled Kherson.
People who agreed to leave Oleshky would be taken to Crimea or Russia before they were able to return to Ukraine, people with knowledge of the discussions told the @FT.

Also on the agenda:
– access for US airlines to Russian airspace for transit and overflights, which would reduce fuel costs
– US companies restart co-operation with Russia on producing and supplying titanium, a crucial component in civilian aircraft

The White House and the Kremlin have suggested that after the war ends a joint venture involving US and Russian oil majors could be resumed off the coast of Sakhalin, an island in the Far East, according to people familiar with the matter.Â
They were also talking about involving the American majors in a plan to resume sales of Russian oil to Europe via the Druzhba pipeline, they added. @FT
