making tapes to self-release has given me a new appreciation for how imprecise making physical objects can be: cassettes never have exactly 60 minutes of tape, they can't record too much sub bass, two-sided printing is never exactly lined up, images can't have too much noise, etc

admittedly, it's a pretty diy set up

who else remembers when Lex Walton said shoegaze was fascist, and instead of being like "i'm joking" when pressed, she doubled down hard

there's a real divide between indie rock fans that like rock music with a weird, not necessarily commercial sound vs. people who like it because the college rock stuff from the 80s and 90s has become classic rock

"over by where Shea Stadium used to be"
There needs to be some sort of nickname for this corridor of bushwick with all the nightlife

people mistake me for being a "movie guy" but when a friend told me they were going to see You Can See Everything i asked them if that was one of the new emo bands kids are into nowadays

in my defense: 1.) i know about the Nathan Fielder movie, i've just been referring to it as "the Nathan Fielder movie" 2.) you can imagine what i was thinking if you spell it in all lower-case with no spaces, like "youcanseeeverything"

not that there's anything wrong with that!
in my early 20s I was p sure I was gay but was still kind of abstractly fascinated by what made men's attractions tick and something funny is how many of them seem like they have a "type" that's very hard to pin down & then you realize it's just Girls from French New Wave Films

the third section of Pierre Étaix's As Long as You’ve Got Your Health (1966) is a slapstick silent movie that's entirely scored with diegetic industrial noise music

my trick for this situation is to act like i barely know what astrology is and then suss out whether we're just doing a fun little personality quiz thing or if they actually believe it based on how it's explained to me
being a lesbian and a dialectical materialist is a wild experience bc every time astrology gets brought up by a femme i have to explain how horoscopes are fake and a part of esoteric nazism and telling her that feels like i just shot her family dog infront of her

it might technically be lying but you'd be amazed at how little i've gotten away with knowing about astrology based on the people i know

Genuine question: why do I never have service inside the subway system anymore? Like, not even in the station?

it's october, man. we can't be starting the christmas movie culture war this early...
My 8 yr old son is watching Home Alone 2 and I had to pause it to show him what America looked like when I was his age.

that old head was Henry Flynt
every old head says something similar. it is a cycle. like i bet there was some dudes who were 45 when the beatles were blowing up, saying things like: "these conceptual albums will never take on. music is dead"

Robert Fripp fully mastered this according to one of my favorite youtube comments of all time
Some bands are only for guys who know how to play guitar

i'd have to say my favorite was probably Apple O' but that's just because i always got them confused with Deerhoof
you can tell a lot about a guy's taste in indie music circa 2005-2010 by their favorite deerhunter album (cryptograms is the best)
