From building flood protection to restoring degraded land, counties are taking urgent action to protect lives and livelihoods. Watch how Kenya’s Counties Are Leading the Fight and Building Climate Resilience Through #FLLoCA Program.
Coffee farmers at Kiamwangi Coffee Factory in Iria-ini Ward, Mathira East Sub-County, are looking forward to better quality and better returns following the construction of a modern solar coffee dryer under the World Bank-funded #FLLoCA Program, implemented by the County Government of Nyeri with the National Government.
The dryer's four metallic drying beds hold 16 tonnes of coffee per cycle and cut drying time from about 14 days to 7, preserving bean quality and reducing post-harvest losses. The Iria-ini Coffee Farmers Society, with over 1,200 members, projects annual production to grow from 580,000 kg to more than one million kg in the coming years.
The project also includes tree planting to strengthen climate resilience in coffee-growing communities.
#WordOfTheWeek: County Climate Change Unit (CCCU)
This is the staffed unit inside a county government that coordinates climate planning, budgeting and reporting.
By linking community priorities to county plans and budgets, it keeps climate action organized, accountable and sustained beyond individual projects.
"Water is life, and every drop counts," says Lilian Auma Owiti, a Special Needs Education teacher at Got Oyenga Special Unit, Siaya County.
With reliable water from the #FLLoCA funded Got Oyenga Water Project, teachers and caregivers can now keep learners clean, wash clothes and maintain a safe learning environment.
In the kitchen, cook Florence Anyango Oduor no longer depends on children bringing water from home. The supply now supports meals for about 66 learners, as well as drinking water, handwashing and cleaning.
Locally led #ClimateAction means dignity, health and more time for learning.
Happy Mashujaa Day!
Today we honour the heroes who shaped our nation, and we celebrate the everyday heroes leading climate action in their communities: Ward Climate Change Committees, farmers, women and youth groups building resilience in counties across Kenya.
In Marigat Village, Kabazi Ward, Subukia Sub-County, a #FLLoCA funded propagation hub is growing the seeds of climate resilience.
The hub's solar-powered water system is now running, feeding three 10,000-litre tanks, irrigation lines and two greenhouses where sweet potatoes, cassava and nutrient-rich indigenous vegetables are being propagated for local farmers.
A community field day will give farmers hands-on training in climate-smart agriculture, helping them grow more food with less water. By focusing on drought-resistant crops, the hub is strengthening food security and livelihoods in Kabazi Ward.
#WordOfTheWeek: Locally-Led Climate Action
This is an approach where communities identify their own climate risks, set priorities and shape the investments made in their wards.
Through FLLoCA, it has grown into working county institutions and 1,775 community-identified climate investments across 45 counties.
This #WorldFoodDay, we're reminded that food security starts with climate resilience.
Erratic rains, prolonged droughts and floods are putting harvests, livestock and livelihoods at risk across Kenya, and the farmers who feed the nation feel it first. The solutions are already growing in our communities.
Through #FLLoCA, counties and wards are investing in what local people have prioritised: water pans and small-scale irrigation, drought-tolerant crops, climate-smart farming and restored landscapes. When communities lead, climate finance reaches the farm, and the farm feeds the nation.
The Sinonin Water Investment Project in Soy Ward, Soy Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, is set to benefit more than 200 households with improved access to reliable water.
Valued at KES 4.9 million and being implemented under the #FLLoCA Program, the project will bring clean water closer to homes, easing daily burdens and strengthening the community's climate resilience.
More than 300 households in Charagita Ward, Ol Joro Orok Sub-County, will benefit from reliable water once the Charagita Dispensary Water Project is complete.
Funded through the #FLLoCA Program in partnership with the County Government of Nyandarua, the project includes a 50 m³ elevated steel water tank, water reticulation, fencing and a tree nursery, combining better water access with environmental conservation.
In Burat Ward, Isiolo County, water is coming closer to home. The Elsa Ntirim water investmet involves equipping a borehole and constructing a 32 m³ elevated steel tank, bringing reliable water to the community in water-scarce Isiolo.
Reliable water means less time spent searching for it, healthier families and livestock, and stronger resilience to drought.
Happy Mazingira Day!
Today we celebrate Kenya's environment and the communities working to protect it. Through the #FLLoCA Program, counties and communities are restoring rivers, planting trees and conserving the ecosystems that sustain their livelihoods.
Let us all play our part in protecting our environment for future generations.
#WordOfTheWeek: County Climate Change Fund (CCCF)
This is a dedicated county fund set aside for climate action. Counties commit at least 1.5% of their development budget to it, shifting climate finance from donor-driven projects to predictable, county-owned investment in community resilience.
Women in Kiromwok, Simotwet and Kaptembwo villages in Bomet County no longer have to trek up to three kilometres downhill to fetch water.
The Chepkitach Spring Water Project, implemented under Phase II of the #FLLoCA Program, pumps water uphill to Kiromwok Centre, delivering clean water to more than 480 households. It also supplies Kiromwok Shopping Centre, Kiromwok Dispensary and Kiromwok Primary School.
Local businesses, especially hotels, have seen water costs drop sharply, and tenants and shop owners are enjoying lower expenses, boosting the local economy.
For Kenya's farmers and pastoralists, the gap between 1.5°C and 1.8°C isn't a statistic, it's the difference between resilience and ruin.
In this week's #LocalClimateActionVoices, we unpack UNEP's warning that a temporary overshoot is now increasingly unavoidable, and why empowered local action is key to limiting how high temperatures rise and how long they stay there.

Coffee farmers at Giathugu Coffee Factory in Rugi Ward, Mukurwe-ini Sub-County, have welcomed a newly completed modern solar coffee dryer investment under the #FLLoCA Program.
With a capacity of 16 tonnes of coffee beans per cycle, the dryer cuts drying time from 14 days to just 7, improving bean quality and reducing post-harvest losses. The factory expects production to rise from 150,000 kg last season to more than 250,000 kg this year.
Giathugu is one of nine Nyeri coffee factories benefiting from the program, supporting a cooperative of more than 1,100 registered farmers and creating new jobs in the community.
For years, pupils at Got Oyenga Primary School in North Alego Ward, Siaya County, carried water from home. Teachers struggled to keep classrooms clean and kitchen staff cooked with a supply that was unreliable and sometimes dirty.
The Got Oyenga Water Project, a community-proposed investment under the #FLLoCA Program, has changed that. It now serves Got Oyenga Comprehensive School's 552 learners, including 20 learners with special needs, and supplies about 3,000 residents across Komolo, Nyamila, Hono and Nyalgunga sub-locations.
Clean water is supporting hygiene, the school feeding programme and even farming on the school grounds.
More than 5,000 households in Kokwomoi, Soin Ward, Rongai Sub-County are set to benefit from a clean water project funded through the #FLLoCA Program.
Building on a borehole first drilled by the County Government of Nakuru, the investment covers solarisation, water kiosks, 10,000 and 50,000 litre storage tanks, and a 5.2 kilometre pipeline serving Upper and Lower Kokwomoi, including Kokwomoi Primary School. Security lights, fencing and a gate protect the infrastructure.
With the project 95 percent complete, residents are already drawing clean, safe water, with Kokwomoi Dispensary and the nearby shopping centre next in line. Ward Climate Change Committees are rallying the community to protect and maintain the project for generations to come.
What if the true test of climate resilience is not how we recover from disaster, but how well we prepare before it strikes?
This week on #LocalClimateActionVoices, we look at how Kenya is strengthening preparedness through locally led climate action, by helping communities anticipate risks and protect lives and livelihoods ahead of the rains.
