Message from a reader: “I’m morally opposed to paying higher taxes to lower the tickets for people who almost kill me in their cars every day.”
There's been a flurry of talk this month in the D.C. Council about whether parking and traffic fines should be reduced. But the reality is that making tickets cheaper for drivers will be costly for the city, and that could complicate any real action: washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-r…
Remember the time a transit community engagement consultant wrote an article about visiting Amsterdam to see how they built transit infrastructure and was shocked and offended that they didn’t do “community engagement”?

At long last we have finally created the remote control war pretending to be a video game from Orson Scott Card’s classic “Don’t Create The Remote Control War Pretending To Be A Video Game”
Ukrainian-developed FPV drone simulator “Remote Reaper: FPV Drone” has officially left Early Access, with version 1.0 now available on Steam.
Developed in collaboration with military pilots, the simulator focuses on combat FPV drone operations and introduces several features in its full release, including armored vehicles with modeled vulnerable zones, electronic warfare effects that can disrupt video feeds and control signals during the final stage of an attack, and a customizable drone editor.
Version 1.0 also adds configurable weather conditions, custom mission editing, real-time flights with other pilots and a racing mode.
Players can use FPV hardware or a gamepad with realistic flight physics, or opt for simplified controls using a keyboard and mouse.

thats right! frontier model development goes in the SCIF hole!
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

I’ve been doing this the last 3 years (finetuning slms for special purposes) and it’s a surefire way to experience the bitter lesson.
It’s good for specific use-cases like high volume or low latency tasks but it’s not cheap.
You end up in a never ending spiral of dataset and eval curation, model release chasing, managing inference. Yes, you can beat the big lab model at the one very specific task but its not easy to do and ongoing maintenance is expensive, even with agents.
We were able to fine tune an open weight model (Qwen3.5-9B) on proprietary internal data at @coinbase, and it out performed frontier models, at much lower cost and speed, for a specialized task (fraud prevention in this case).
I think we'll see more of this pattern inside companies. The frontier models are amazing generalists. But increasingly you'll see specialist models out perform on more narrow tasks, either working on teams, or by themselves.
We're making it easy to fine tune models internally for our employees. We even have a skill for it in our internal harness that makes it easy to spin these up and start training them:
"/fine-tune-and-serve-llm I want to fine-tune Qwen for payments risk review. help me get started"
I imagine we'll have some backend services that could be replaced entirely by this new architecture.

I remember when four beautiful young Pepperdine students were killed and a fifth was seriously injured in one PCH crash and @CaltransHQ response was SIGNS AND PAINT and “review” of speed limits. Because the only thing worse than killing four kids is slowing down a car.

the consequences this driver faced for hitting two kids while running a red light? a "failure to yield to pedestrians" ticket. $150 fine and 5 points on his license, but don't worry, if he does it two more times in the next 18 months he might lose his license temporarily

The OpenAI math papers have some very interesting results, but some of them also have glaring errors, and both errors and breakthroughs are buried under poorly-written slop that any other person or company would be embarrassed to publish.
It's cool though, when you're OpenAI you can just fire a slop cannon at the math nerds and move on to something else, while they do all the hard work of validating and proofing your results.

At this point @TMobile been breached so many times the threat actors should qualify for employee benefits, stock options, and a damn pension
Hell, their IR team isn't handling breaches. They're managing a toxic on-again, off-again relationship every six weeks

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
