I actually learned about this from our own vuln scanner. The abliterated models kept finding vulnerabilities like these, where a third party could inject malicious code straight into a customer's deploy. I thought this was our agent being stupid. (Why are you finding vulns in people's CI??) Took a few examples for me to realize this is a very real weakpoint and almost nobody is robust to it yet. But the good news is it's very easy to fix once you know about it.
Hack vector we're seeing in almost every customer codebase: github actions that aren't pinned to specific versions. Github actions are build steps that run in CI and in deploy workflows. There are third party actions that do all kinds of utility operations: list changed files, log in to Docker, deploy to github pages... etc. Everyone uses them. The problem is that their behavior can change. This is code that runs in your CI that can change under you at any time. It isn't versioned by your own version control. A third party can change what these actions do whenever they want. A lot of very widely used utilities are managed by solo devs on their personal github accounts: peaceiris/actions-gh-pages, dorny/paths-filter, appleboy/ssh-action. If these github accounts get taken over, the attacker can run arbitrary code within your github runners: exfiltrate your code, steal whatever secrets are in CI, even inject code changes into deploys. A lot of github workflows pin to a version, like dorny/paths-filter@v3. This is not good enough, because those version tags can be changed at any time to point to new commits. You need to pin to a specific sha, like dorny/paths-filter@0e4a8c6effa4802afeda77dc8d303f8176d7dfad. This happened last year. Attackers compromised a popular github action. (A simple util that listed files changed in a PR.) They shipped a malicious version of the github action, and then they retroactively changed version tags like "v1.0.0" to point to that compromised code. They used this to steal secrets from 23,000 repos. This is a really broad amplification vector that will take you very little effort to avoid upfront. I'm not sure if this category of vuln even has a name, but it's a ticking timebomb. What we're doing for our own code: 1. Switch all github actions to pinned shas 2. Add a lint rule that makes sure all github workflows use pinned shas, not any other kind of version tag Both of these are oneshot-able in your agent of choice.

At @primateriacom, we are building chemical simulators that reflects reality, so we can run experiments for new discoveries entirely on a computer. Are coding agents good enough to help us get there? To find out, we used experimental results to test their work on reengineering existing simulators. Introducing Wavefunction bench: primateria.com/blog/wavefunc…

Sometimes our global problems that looked impossible to solve are actually pretty easy to solve
The Ocean Cleanup is now $40M/year short of what’s needed to stop up to 1/3rd of all plastic flowing into the oceans by 2030. That’s less than 1% of what America spends on Halloween decorations each year.

this whole hype about Instinct is like stolen valor to me - their investors promoting them as the next Cursor or ChatGPT while it's completely different mechanics, and way overvalued in terms of user growth or revenue which is zero.

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Last month, we demonstrated high-rate alchemy: turning mercury into real, stable gold, beating CERN’s record by a factor of 10. Last week, we enriched isotopes in the world’s most powerful plasma centrifuge, beating the Soviet record that stood for 40 years. Now, we’re building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.
