There's a story about Dilla wanting to sample a drum break on a Roy Ayers record, I think, but the whole thing had a spoken monologue over it. He broke that thing down to 64th-note microseconds, found 64 tiny shards with no talking, & rebuilt the drums without the monologue
Happy 50th, Dilla. "The way he used technology to change hip hop makes it feel like the miracle of the pyramids. It sounds simple until you hear the original samples. Then you really appreciate Dilla’s craft." @pbwolf More: sthrow.com/dilla Vinyl: sthrow.com/donuts

I have never encountered any subject in my life as complicated to fact-check as Israel/Palestine. Take what should be a very simple question: Who attacked first in 1948? If you’re claiming Palestinians had their land stolen, this is a really important question. Is it stolen if you started the fight and a bunch of Holocaust survivors fought you off? So you read about Israel declaring independence and Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq attacking. Seems simple. They attacked first. But then, no. Because you read about Palestinians coming to an agreement to limit Jewish immigration and being lied to about it. So, Palestinians were correct to feel their land was stolen. And then, no. You go back and read about all the Jewish people who fled Russia and worked hard to cultivate the land, something the Arab population thought was impossible. Under homesteading principles, this is their land. And then, no, because you go back to 1946 and read about Zionist extremists committing terrorism by bombing the King David Hotel when they were concerned they wouldn’t get a Jewish state. Anyone on Twitter that is telling you any of this is straightforward is completely full of shit.

In our crisis-ridden world, “resilience” is an apology for the status quo. It looks for just how little some unit—a body, a region, a population—might need, while avoiding the possibility of significant change. We can’t afford it any longer. thebaffler.com/latest/sick-a…
