Samsung’s Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) captures screenshots of your screen twice per second identifies what you’re watching and sells that data to advertisers, data brokers, and cross-device tracking networks.
It knows you watched The Office at 9 PM. Switched to CNN at 10. Browsed YouTube at 11. Fell asleep to Netflix at midnight. And it sold that viewing profile to Samsung’s advertising partners before you woke up.
Samsung just settled a lawsuit with the Texas Attorney General over how its smart TVs collect and monetize viewing data. Samsung’s ACR records image and audio every 500 milliseconds regardless of source antenna, cable, HDMI, streaming app.
As of 2026, there is no major consumer TV brand that ships with ACR disabled by default. Every Samsung TV ever connected to the internet is collecting your viewing data right now unless you’ve manually turned it off. And 95% of owners have never opened the Privacy menu.
A digital privacy researcher told me: “Your Samsung TV knows more about your entertainment habits than your spouse does. It knows exactly what you watch, when you watch it, how long you watch, what you skip, what you rewatch, and what time you fall asleep. And it sells that profile continuously to anyone willing to pay. The TV you bought to watch content is watching you watch content. And most owners have no idea.”
