For those who don't know the story behind this weak attempt to smear Miller: On April 11, 2007, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all remaining charges (sexual assault, kidnapping, and related offenses) after a multi-month independent investigation by his office. He went further than simply dismissing the case, stating that the players were innocent and that the charges resulted from “a tragic rush to accuse and a failure to verify serious allegations.” He also said there was “no credible evidence that an attack occurred.” Key reasons from the investigation included:Crystal Mangum (the accuser) repeatedly changed her story. DNA tests from dozens of players (including the accused) did not match her claims. Other evidence contradicted her account. Eyewitness identification procedures were unreliable. Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong, who had pursued the case, was later disbarred for misconduct that included withholding exculpatory DNA evidence and making improper public statements. The players were never convicted of any of the charges. In December 2024, Mangum publicly admitted she had fabricated the allegations, saying she “made up a story that wasn’t true.”
