A password-reset flow isn't tested just because the happy path works. Check expired tokens, reused links, and tokens submitted for the wrong account. A reset token should be short-lived, single-use, and bound to its intended user.

A large download and an interactive SSH session stress different parts of a network. Bandwidth limits how much data you can move per second; latency affects each round trip. Measure both before treating every slow connection as a bandwidth problem.

A small result set doesn't mean a cheap query. Inspect the execution plan and rows scanned before adding an index. Each index can help reads, but it also costs storage and work on writes. Optimize for the queries your app actually runs.

A queue absorbs a traffic spike; it doesn't create processing capacity. Track the oldest job's age, not just queue depth. A request marked 'accepted' can still miss the user's deadline. How long can a job wait before it's effectively failed?

A green rerun doesn't explain the red build. For flaky CI, keep the original logs, random seed, and test order. Rerunning can unblock a branch, but preserving the failing conditions gives you something to reproduce and fix.

Logs preserve what happened; a debugger lets you inspect what's happening. For a reproducible local bug, a conditional breakpoint can be more useful than another dozen print statements. When do you reach for a debugger instead of adding logs?

Renaming a file to .jpg doesn't make it an image. For uploads, don't trust the filename or the client's Content-Type header. Validate the content, limit its size, and store it where it cannot execute as server code.

A service can be running and still be unreachable from another machine. Check its listening address: 127.0.0.1 accepts local connections, not remote ones. Confirm the intended interface before changing firewall rules, and expose only what needs to be reachable.

A cart that stores its items and a separately updated subtotal has two values to keep in sync. If a value can be calculated from existing state, consider deriving it instead. Fewer independent values mean fewer ways for the UI to contradict itself.

A cloud cleanup isn't finished when the VM disappears. Detached disks, snapshots, load balancers, and reserved IPs can outlive the workload. Tag resources with an owner and purpose, then review the whole set when retiring a service.

A deployment can pass health checks and still drop requests when old containers stop. Test graceful shutdown: stop accepting new work, drain in-flight requests, and exit within the termination deadline. A clean startup is only half the rollout.

Time to first diff isn't the same as time to a mergeable change. When comparing coding agents, include review time, failed attempts, and cleanup—not just generation speed. Which part of the workflow still takes the most human time?

A debug log can become a second database of passwords, tokens, and personal data. Log the event and identifiers needed to investigate it, not the entire payload. Redact sensitive fields before they reach your logging pipeline, and test the redaction.

A script works in your terminal but fails under cron. Check the working directory, PATH, and environment variables before changing the script's logic. Scheduled jobs don't inherit your interactive shell setup. Which hidden dependency has caught you out?

TypeScript can describe an API response, but it doesn't validate the JSON arriving over the network. Treat external data as untrusted at runtime. Validate at the boundary, then let the rest of your app work with the checked shape.
23
Autoscaling your app also multiplies its database connection pools. Ten instances with a pool of 20 can request 200 connections. Size pools against the database's total budget, leaving room for migrations, jobs, and administration.

The deploy button got automated. The rollback plan got optimism.

Give a coding agent the exact command that reproduces a bug, not just the stack trace. Include the working directory, required setup, and expected result. A reproducible starting point helps distinguish a code failure from a broken environment.

A scanner alert isn't proof that an application is exploitable. In an authorized test, verify the affected component and reproduce the behavior safely. Separate confirmed impact from assumptions. What evidence makes a finding actionable for your team?

Changing a DNS record isn't an instant switch for every client. Cached answers can remain until their TTL expires. For a planned move, lower the TTL ahead of time—not at cutover—and keep the old endpoint available during the transition.
