It’s easier than ever to build a company by stitching together APIs, models, and infrastructure.
The flip side is that one compromised service can potentially hold the keys to everything else.
A pretty uncomfortable tradeoff and conversation in now having with Instinct + Muse!

If you’ve ever spent an entire weekend going down a rabbit hole nobody asked you to explore, only to emerge convinced you’ve discovered the next big thing, we should probably talk.
We’re hiring an Investment Associate at @collabfund!
Looking for someone endlessly curious who loves talking to founders, has 37 tabs of new products open, and something always half-built in the terminal.

Collab Fund is so lucky to have Tristan's wealth of knowledge on durable consumer brands.
He's done it as a builder (founded Bevel), board member (Shake Shack) and now as an investor (Collab Holdings).
Tristan shared more details on Express Checkout:
"I've known Craig for over 15 years...When I was at Foursquare, it was the New York startup King. That's where I got to know Craig. Right around the time that I think he was starting the fund. So, he and I got super cool, and he actually invested in Walker & Company through Collaborative Fund.
[Venture] is a very transactional business, as you know. It's hard to find authentically committed, loyal, courageous, just interesting people who stick with you. And Craig has always been that for me. And he's also sharp. He hasn't only been that for me. I've observed him being that for other people, right? So that was really meaningful to me."

Hard agree.
BUT ... "growth" is a complex word.
I've always loved "resting growth rate" (hat tip: BVP): how fast you grow with zero marketing $.
Pick your numbers, but 40% resting growth beats 80% or 130% growth fueled by marketing $.
Christina Cacioppo on high growth v. high margins:
"I think in the fullness of time, an 80% growth business with 80% margins will actually be better than a 160% growth business with 30% margins.
One of these will return more cash in the fullness of time. But today the latter is valued at 10x the multiple of the former.
And so there's a part where everyone's being irrational here. And then there's a very clear game-on-the-field piece.
If you need to be financed, you're looking at investors today, many of whom are AI maximalists, that are like, 'We'll invest in the labs and we'll invest in tractors in Iowa. Nothing in between.'"

I love this. Odd investor interest for non-exponential companies 🙂

I’ve been attending a few dinners in SF just to catch up with old friends and meet up and coming founders.
I’m usually the only non tech founder in the room so all the tech folks don’t find me competitive and open up to me.
The one thing I’ve learned: no matter how successful the founder is (8-9 figure revenues, 10 figure valuations), they still feel the same fomo everyone else feels about AI and all the ridiculous AI exits happening.
AI anxiety is everywhere.
A thoughtful story from our own Hamza Choudery:
"The American Dream lingers in our rhetoric, but its building blocks — a home that shelters, food that nourishes, education that empowers — are drifting out of reach.
Was the promise that carried families like mine across oceans, like a prayer in folded palms, reaching the next generation exhausted?"

We’re coming to Cartagena 🇨🇴
We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cartagena Mayor’s Office to tackle plastic pollution in Cartagena’s waterways and prevent waste from reaching the Caribbean Sea.
Cartagena marks another step in our efforts across Colombia, where we’re working with local partners to stop plastic pollution at its source.

¡Llegamos a Cartagena! 🇨🇴

So funny. Same goes for health. Many won't eat a strawberry that's been within 100 feet of a pesticide but will happily inject untested peptides bought from a Chinese supplier on Telegram, explicitly labeled NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Foursquare is the only social media I’ve ever enjoyed (besides X ofc…)
When I moved to NYC in the mid-2010s, my friends and I used it religiously. There was so much serendipity checking into brunch and realizing your friend was working around the corner.
I hope we see this kind of humanity in consumer tech again.
Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

grateful for the @artblocks_io crew, spearheading another AB Weekend this week in Marfa TX
and v honored the curation crew at @glitchmarfa has the opportunity to show new code-based work from one of my fav artists
@mpkoz
this friday, october 23rd @ 8:00 PM
mpkoz's new collection ‘Believers’ is about religion and technology
where in both, people create systems outside of themselves and surrender some degree of knowledge and agency
placing trust in intelligence we cannot fully see or understand
historically, religious stained-glass objects operated as representations and filters between reality and the realm beyond
so too do @mpkoz’s twelve ‘Believers’
twelve sculptures, each with their own distinct color palette and composition, randomly dictated by code
painstakingly constructed by the artist in physical form
and paired with an associated art object on the @ethereum blockchain
this friday at 8:00 PM (CT), join us at @glitchmarfa in the cathedral
where you’ll witness a ritual, through which one of you will ascend
in a live performance constructed by @magey_mage x @mpkoz, in partnership with the @glitchmarfa curation team
all twelve pieces will be on display at @glitchmarfa
fire off a DM to me or our team to learn more ❤️
We were fortunate to back @dojideon when he built Forethought. Couldn’t be more thrilled to be at it again together!
Espa is now generally available! Personal AI agents are here, and I sat down with @BloombergTV @RomaineBostick to discuss what will decide which ones people actually let into their lives.
Our goal is to be the most trusted AI assistant for life and work.

such a tasty articulation.
a different analogy that comes to mind is a camera lens. great leaders know how to find the right framing for a problem/discussion: when to zoom in, when to zoom out, and how to bring sharp focus to the ambiguous. doing this quickly and incisively is a scarce capability.
not surprising that we often attribute it to experience - it's sample-inefficient to learn and hard to manufacture. you have to be in the field doing it every week/day/hour to build a reliable policy.
