It’s a warm spring-like October at Concordia Chicago. True to form, the students are pairing up in wonderful ways. You think: How good they found each other—that’s another obvious couple! Give us a few more years and CUC will be making a nice contribution to natural church growth

Perhaps the only politician in the country less popular than Donald Trump is the mayor of Chicago with a 22% approval rating.

This fall I took the flu shot again. I hadn’t in recent years —last yr was said to be a misfire & less effective—but my 98 yo dad is near me now & I’m visiting the nursing home while still working at a school. No COVID shot for me, though. Except I may have already taken it…

Last winter I signed up for a paid study for healthy men over 50. Abt $500 total to be part of a study of the next COVID round. Blessed w good health, I signed up. No effect. Maybe I got the placebo? But this is the same year I’ve lost over 10 pounds, kept consistent at weights &

upped my running game. I’m in better shape than I have been for years. For those who embrace “post hoc ergo proper hoc” faulty logic, I highly recommend the COVID shot (or the placebo—just take both to be sure).

Another s*xual assault allegation roils a big public U (Chicago). Debate about consent culture continues. Did she agree? Having been drugged (!), she has little recall. Of course, drugs undermine consent altogether especially if taken unawares. But there’s another problem, too.

Consent is practiced as a private agreement between two. No witnesses. It’s structured to easily devolve into he said/she said. What if we made consent public? Many witnesses, families standing by, legally binding. We could then give it an honorable name: marriage.

We are not like leaves which falling divide between the water in the carbon to separate and never to come back together again in that form. For when we separate in death, God remembers, and we await the day when he gathers us up again in his love.

This might be my third mid-life crisis. (I’ve been mid life for a while now). My first one I bought an expensive bicycle. 2nd …. Not that memorable but let’s count the skydive. Now it’s body-building. I’m surprised by how the old body can shape up.

I got to know a little struggling church in the suburbs today. 12 grey-haired Baby boomers, singing contemporary songs with no idea that their contemporary is now passé. They have old hymnals in their pews (TLH) but their eyes are on the screens.

In the coffee hour afterward, I let them know about the young people who, because of the cultural chaos they have endured, are taking refuge in traditional forms of Christianity and finding comfort in that centuries-old stability.

My dad grew up in Chicago, like real Chicago. Yesterday he told me that everything past Harlem (city limits) was no man’s land. Today just about my whole orbit of life is just that other side of Harlem.

Warnings are sounding that we’ll be in trouble “if AI gets smarter than we are.” That is not the metric of doom. A dangerous person is not necessarily smartest—just malicious with opportunity and power. We may be there, Friends.

I encountered an adult today who, having written a formal paper for a theological interview, did not capitalize "son" as in "Jesus is the son of God." This is not the first time. Regularly seen with 18 y.o's. Now adults. There is a grammar, even a spelling, to confessing Christ.

What joy to experience the celebration of Holy Baptism at a Hispanic Lutheran congregation. They do it right, my friends. Pull out all the stops and let the joy ring loud!

Replying to @Jarstad64
@Jarstad64 The Lutheran Confessions (Formula of Concordia) have an article (7) on the presence of Christ in the Holy Supper. I surmise that “in, with & under” are not so much an explanation as an apologetic defense against error. What we affirm is the “is”: This is His Body/Blood

“With” counters the transubstantiation of the RC which denies that bread and wine are ontologically present, tho St Paul said “The bread we bread is a fellowship…” (1 Cor 10:16)

“Under” affirms the fact that body and blood are present in a mysterious mode, not of the meat market (“Capernaitic” misunderstanding of John 6), but discerned only by faith acc to Christ’s Word, yet received by all who partake, so truly is He there.
