A wonderful reflection on Hawks's care in orchestrating the various physicalities of his actors, both in casting and direction.
Reminder that Red River plays a central role in Howard Hawks's work because the casting of Montgomery Clift opposite John Wayne unleashed new visions of violence (and how to stylize them); on @tcm at 3am (ET): newyorker.com/culture/richar…

The problem with modern horror isn't that it's making you 'scared'...it's that it's teaching you to be scared of the wrong things: a girlfriend (Obsession), old people (X), disabled children (Lee Cronin's The Mummy), your family, the sick, etc...also that murder is fine if trauma

Being a zoomer is having only grown up with deconstructing stories having never known the original story
Growing up as a Zoomer is surreal because you see writers mocking the "Knight saves princess from dragon" trope but the only popular non-Sleeping Beauty story that plays it straight is the legend of St. George. Not even Beowulf or most Arthurian stories fit that criteria.

After Twain, the import of Missouri for the American mythic identity was criminally underdeveloped.
Missouri is its own thing. It surpasses any “regional identity” it is the ultimate culmination of America itself. Missouri is the American dream

I typically watch a decent amount of sports commentary and coverage during the football season. It is really striking the degree to which nearly all of these shows have become nothing but infomercials for sports betting. No one in the sports media space is even pretending to grapple with the ethics of shilling for sports betting companies every day all day. I guess it’s not surprising but you might think that there would be at least a little bit of internal debate about whether they should be relentlessly hawking a product that is guaranteed to lose collectively millions of dollars for their audience, and which obviously jeopardizes their own ability to be remotely objective, and which is having such a clearly deleterious effect on the sports they’re paid to cover. But apparently not. They all just decided to become full time salesmen for Fan Duel with no further deliberation on the matter. Okay then.

On this day in 1893, Lillian Gish was born in Springfield, OH. I asked her if actors in silent films had a script with dialogue to memorize or if they were just given a general idea of what was being said in the scene and they ad-libbed the words. This was her remarkable reply:

Ben Affleck says "Justice League" reshoots were "the low point of my career" and the studio used the death of Zack Snyder's daughter as an "excuse" to replace Snyder with Joss Whedon. "That was sh*tty, him being taken off that movie and the reshoots that we did... Somebody's death by suicide eclipses everything. The way in which that was, I thought, used as an excuse [to replace Zack with Joss Whedon] was one of the sh*ttiest things I've ever seen. It was so gross. The whole environment and vibe [on set during the reshoots], much of which I was not privy to but heard secondhand from the actors, it was just, 'Wow, this is about as gross as it gets.'" "I saw how not to make a movie like that, which is where the studio is at odds with the filmmaker. You are really making a mistake. I was really glad and gratified that Zack got to release [his version via the SnyderCut]. That was f*cking great. I was really happy for him." (via Happy Sad Confused) variety.com/2026/film/news/b…
