Last week our former Director Raluca Muresan delivered an important statement to the UN general assembly First Committee, on behalf of Control Arms.
Her poignant remarks demonstrated the severity of modern conflict, the growing military spending that fuels it, and the role that States could play in reducing this through concrete application of the Arms Trade Treaty.
“The people who live with the consequences of these transfers will never sit in this room. They are owed proof that the rules this Assembly has created over 10 years ago, are being applied”.

On the 8th of October Control Arms and Forum on the Arms Trade co-hosted a discussion titled: “War in Sudan: Outside Weapons and What Can Be Done”.
The panel discussed how stakeholders can increase pressure for an end to the flow of weapons, strengthen accountability, protect civilians and bring the war in Sudan to an end.

What does the Arms Trade Treaty mean in practice, more than a decade after its entry into force?
During a CSP12 side event, speakers examined how Articles 6 and 7 are interpreted and applied through State practice, UN mechanisms, civil society research and legal developments.

Malaysia’s decision to halt additional shipments bound for Israel at Tanjung Pelepas Port and to continue inspecting shipments suspected of being linked to Israel demonstrates the importance of meaningful oversight of cargo passing through national territory.
ATT States Parties can act: strengthen controls on arms transfers, investigate and halt shipments posing a substantial risk that exported weapons could contribute to serious violations of IHL, and ensure that transit routes and ports are not used to facilitate such transfers.
Governments have tools at their disposal. They should use them.
