You need to have a thick skin as a greenhouse manager in a breeding program. Our Erica Miller skillfully propagated and maintained greenhouses full of plants for 5 months only to have me throw 80% of these beautiful (but genetically inferior) plants into the compost.

My student Luis Monserrate gave a great talk today on mapping genes for seed size in hemp at the Agronomy/Crop Science/Soil Science Conference. I spoke yesterday, so with our talks done and the sun out at lunchtime, I went to see this cool structure nearby.

We harvested a 2 acre scaleup plot of our new dual purpose hemp cultivar Ursa ‘Grande’ today. We probably should have found a larger lower sieve, because the seeds are about double the size of other hemp cultivars.
