Congrats to the high school Class of 2020, as well as to the teachers, coaches, and most of all, parents and family who’ve guided you along the way. Thanks for letting me be part of your big day!

"how many layers of agile are you on?" "like maybe 5 or 6 right now, we use trello, do standup" "you are like a little baby, watch this"

It's only a "deadline" if your project will die failing to meet it. Otherwise it's just a sadline. I'm going to call them that from now on.

If you can write production code that covers all cases then you can write tests that cover all cases.

Going to a conference? Yes! Introduce yourself. Say hello. Chat to people. They're lovely. Really! And if you're already chatting in a group, make your group approachable using @ericholscher's Pac-Man Rule. Here's how it works. Have fun!

I've never bought Sutherland's "twice the work, half the time" thing. It's more "better work, as much time as it takes." To me, the key to "better" is experimentation, communication, & collaboration. Mix in continuous improvement and time will take care of itself.

Everyone makes mistakes. The main difference is that successful people learn from them and unsuccessful people don’t. By creating an environment in which it's okay to safely make mistakes so that people can learn from them, you’ll see rapid progress & fewer significant mistakes.

People who mimic canned processes or frameworks created elsewhere (Scrum, SAFe, you name it) don't understand that issue. That's why those canned processes fail so often. Your own teams have to develop their own ways of working. Teach them how to do that. 4/

You can't just move a process from one place to another (and expect it to work). Teams must develop their own way of working. In fact, that's more important than the process that the teams come up with. Different teams work best in different ways. 3/

Effective planning is dynamic and incremental. Big up front plans are waste because they're time spent doing something that's immediately obsolete. Dynamic planning that continuously adapts to the current reality is essential.
Impact mapping, story mapping, story slicing, lean canvas creation, lean experiments, prioritisation. Just a few examples of excellent PLANNING activities that high performing, effective software/product dev teams and orgs do. Please let's stop the "planning is waste" rhetoric.

Our Code Camp came up with the ultimate minimal IDE: test && commit || reset Run the tests. Commit if they pass. Reset hard if they fail. How would your coding workflow change if you used this feedback loop?

@lisacrispin and @janetgregoryca Thought you might like this. Years ago, I read the book Agile Testing. I created this drawing on a whiteboard. Unbeknownst to me, it moved through two buildings and two years before I saw it again and no one had erased it!
