On May 29, Popular Democracy (@popdemoc) abruptly announced a massive restructuring, including the lay off of 21 workers, effective mid-July.
Twelve laid-off staff belong to our union, including some of Popular Democracy’s most experienced and longtime staff members.
We’re happy to announce that we just held our second bargaining meeting with management to negotiate for our next contract. We’re keeping in mind the people who were laid off last year during the massive restructuring and layoffs that Popular Democracy conducted.
We are encouraged by the fact that management has agreed to continue with the open bargaining process that was won during our last round of negotiation.

Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was doing what nurses do best — taking action to protect his community — when he was killed by federal agents.
Nurses are outraged by this heinous murder. It’s time to abolish ICE now!

The AFL-CIO mourns our @AFGEnational union brother, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, who was killed today by federal agents.
Our thoughts are with Alex’s loved ones. The Trump administration’s operation—and their actions aimed at stoking violence and chaos—must end.

ALT AFL-CIO Mourns Killing of Minneapolis Union Member, Reiterates Calls for ICE to Leave Minnesota: The AFL-CIO mourns the senseless killing of another Minneapolis resident by federal agents. Alex Jeffrey Pretti was a VA intensive care unit nurse and a member of AFGE Local 3669—a brother in our union family. Our thoughts are with Alex’s loved ones, his union siblings, and the people of Minneapolis at this devastating time. As tens of thousands of Minnesotans made clear peacefully and powerfully yesterday, the Trump administration’s horrific operation—and their actions aimed at stoking violence and chaos—must end. America’s unions join the call for ICE to immediately leave Minnesota before anyone else is hurt or killed. We demand local authorities conduct a full, transparent investigation that will lead to accountability for this tragic and violent act, and for Congress to use its power to hold ICE accountable.

Rest in peace, union brother Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and caregiver who was killed by federal agents simply for showing up for his neighbors and standing up for what’s right. What happened to him could happen to any of us under this government. His courage and compassion will not be forgotten.

From the family: "The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting."
Statement from the family of Alex Pretti, Michael and Susan Pretti:
“We are heartbroken but also very angry.
Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.
The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.
Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you”

He was trying to protect someone he didn’t know. He was willing to put his body in between a vulnerable person and the full force of state violence.

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.
JUST IN: Lawyers file declaration in federal court from first-hand witness to immigration agents' shooting of a US citizen onlookers today. Minneapolis Mayor Frey said details would be used to bolster case for ousting ICE from city. Doc: documentcloud.org/documents/…

there is a lie repeated endlessly: that there is nothing left to save.
but people do not stand in the freezing cold, in daylight, facing guns, watching Americans be murdered in cold blood, for nothing.
there is everything to save.

A union brother was just gunned down by government thugs! Unions must lead the call for strikes and actions. None of this equivocating cowardice. They are killing us in the streets!

Here is a link to @nytimes reporting on what is seen in video footage captured by the public. It's important to be this clear where it can be supported by evidence ... as fed officials irresponsibly spread misleading info in advance. /3 nytimes.com/live/2026/01/24/…

We're horrified & outraged: Immigration agents have once again committed cold-blooded murder of a public observer who posed no threat to them.
This time, they've executed a fellow nurse, Alex Pretti. We demand justice and accountability. Abolish ICE, now! nationalnursesunited.org/pre…
