We planned to kick off the new @creativedlab Reading Group season with traditional fiction that offered a glimpse into a possible future. Then, over the summer, @leopoldasch published Situational Awareness.
It’s a special kind of fiction. We call it quantum fiction™. It’s fiction and non-fiction at the same time. It’s a description of a future that feels fictional but is predicated on a simple extrapolation of the all-too-real “size matters” doctrine for AI models that currently dominates the mindset and investment trajectories of the leading AI companies. This doctrine has so far delivered several seemingly-fictional but actually-real capabilities into the world like AlphaProof, Tesla FSD 12.5.1, and ChatGPT.
This simple extrapolation exercise leads to a fictional-sounding world by 2030 in terms of machine intelligence (superhuman across almost every dimension!), compute capacity (multiple trillion dollar compute clusters!), and energy consumption (AI consumes as much energy in 2030 as the entire US production capacity today! See graph).
As fictional as all this may sound, it has led to real presidential campaign assertions like this recent one: xitter.cf/tsarnick/status/181730…

Highly recommend @leopoldasch's paper if you haven't read. We're covering it in the next @professor_ajay @creativedlab book club meeting. Don't agree with everything, but if you think AI is plateauing, be Bayesian & ask yourself why the ppl with better insider knowledge disagree.
