💡@tjy511 & Martim Mas e Braga were in Haugastøl 🇳🇴w/ @NERCscience-funded & immersive @cryoskills course, enabling @UKRI_News #geoscientists to design, build & deploy their own #sensors in #cold regions. TJ was a co-founder & co-organiser & Martim was a course participant.

Spent last week in Haugastøl, Norway #cryoskills workshop building on my field and electronics skillset. Came away with a working temperature data logger that now lives in my Yard-en!

Monday was a big day: calibrating the sensors (with tuition from @lizbagshaw_ice ) and getting them mounted up onto the stands.
This was followed by The Best Treasure Hunt Ever, led by Emma Fisher, and featuring the resistor colour code, a python script, a crossword where one of the clues was in binary, and a navigation challenge.
Tuesday morning began with field skills: find an avalanche victim with probes; practice navigating in a whiteout; use a satellite phone to report your position and learn how a snowmobile works.
Then we learned about decommissioning our instruments and brought them back in for data analysis. Sadly (but realistically), some instruments ran for longer than others. There are still some firmware bugs to find before they’re fully reliable.

Will be bringing one of these mini stations to the Himalayas in November 🙂. #cryoskills

The #CryoSkills course has culminated in deploying our crafted analogue and digital temperature sensors + data loggers setups outside Haugastøl Turistsenter, and producing some data! 🤩 – at Hol, Norge
Sunday was day 4 of the course, and featured a complex emergency scenario devised by Sam and Lisa: each group had some actors planted amongst them who became hypothermic or got injured.
Then it was back to the workshop to finish building the dataloggers, including a final quality control check and bench test.

Skills gained so far: sled packing and pulling, digging kit out of snow, @arduino coding, soldering, electronics, data logger box building... the list goes on! #cryoskills – at Hol, Norge

Spending today getting our sensors ready to deploy and testing how we respond to emergencies in the field. I’m also pretty lucky to get to spend my birthday in Norway with a fantastic bunch of people. #cryoskills
Yesterday was a big day: we started with more Arduino tutorials and built analogue temperature sensors (using PT1000 probes).
By the end of the day we had 20 dataloggers almost ready to go! A few finishing touches today, and then we’ll test them.
