Technology should bring us together, not widen the gap. I asked my Twitter subscribers for ways in which we can use social media to better unite people rather than divide them. Here's what we came up with: - Use voice. (Twitter Spaces) Talking through ideas and debating them is so much more personal than keyboard wars. Tone of voice means everything. - Use Replies! Don’t just Tweet. Respond to comments, both for and against your argument. Dialogue helps find common ground and also humanizes each other. - Don’t get tempted into extremism for more engagement: It’s easy to be seen if you are nuts, but not as easy if you are moderate and sane. Resist the urge! - Keep emotions out of arguments if you can: Use sources for your arguments and do not engage in personal attacks. Debate the ideas, don't attack the person. Weak people attack people. (Thanks @MattMcGahey05) - Have more of an open mind: Don't immediately discount a person's point of view. People WILL disagree with you, so don't take it personal. (Thanks @MattMcGahey05) Thanks also to @WilliamLaurent3 for chiming in. Please reply with additional ideas!
