You can be good at what you do. And You can be popular for it. Try to be both, but if you can't, it's better to be good.

Is there a case for adoption of a Presumptive Income Tax in Kenya to address the perennial headache around the so called 'hard to tax' sectors?
@KWaruiru believes that with the data now generated through issuance of eTIMS invoices, there's case for it.
I take a different view, as recently as 2019, courtesy of Finance Act 2018, Kenya made an unsuccessful attempt at a Presumptive Income Tax.

Actually, Arthur Johnson, it is you and the county government who should be explaining to us how the client proceeded with construction without the required approvals, no?

Edwin Sifuna – Senator, Nairobi: If you look at the list of the proposals of the things that are supposed to be cut, it ‘dog whistle’ to the politicians. Kenyans, are dealing with deceitful people. Young people are saying the time for talk is over.
Need to remind you all that it's not possible to run Nairobi without having then capacity to demolish buildings.
For this reason you cannot take bribes at all. Because construction is unforgiving. You cut corners you get punished.
NBO development control yiotte must go

THE DEVELOPER of the collapsed Eastleigh building submitted to the NCA development approvals issued by the County Government of Nairobi on 13th Feb. 2024, and NEMA license dated 8th March 2024. Both of these authorities have not stated that these approvals were forged.
Don’t fall for the story that is being well choreographed.

Eastleigh: Pancake collapse in Kiswahili from my lakeside engineer brother. Donge?
Incredible failure.
This is over a year of continuous construction happening in broad daylight that The County was unable to see???
And yet you can't even paint your house without them pulling up.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says the multi-storey building that collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh was under construction without the required approvals, despite an application for a 15-storey building with a basement having been submitted.
Sakaja says the county has forwarded documentation to the DCI for investigations and called for accountability among the developer and professionals involved, including the architect and engineer on record.

This Ebola sounds so clever. Besides identifying countries having elections soon, it turns out it is also a matchmaker.

Jepchirchir Angel, UDA Youth League Captain, on Boniface, the mask seller who was shot by police: We don't know what happened before the shot clip that was captured. You don't know why he was trailed. If you're keen with that video, we all saw the Land Rover. The police officer passed a few people before strategically and specifically point shooting that guy. By the time he did that, I know that probably they had been trailing him from way back. You don't know #CitizenDayBreak

The entire NCA Nairobi region has 4 engineers. How can these guys be able to check compliance for over 500 ongoing projects- its a big joke.
I am also reliably informed there are engineers and architects who have over 100 registered projects. How are these guys managing these projects on a day to day basis? We need to have the difficult conversations.

Gituku: As of now, salaries of up to KSh 24,000 are exempt from PAYE. To reach KSh 32,333, the additional amount is about KSh 8,333. While that amount may not be subject to PAYE, it will attract SHIF, Housing Levy and NSSF deductions. The effective take-home increase is therefore only about KSh 1,200 or slightly more

Under this regime we have seen young men and women die even in police cells so we demand his release as we call out the clear harassment of Commando by the state!

Personal income tax should NEVER be higher than corporate tax. How can corporate tax ( where expenses are allowed) at 30% be Lower than the highest income band ( 32.5% ) ?
This is against the basic tenets of taxation. The highest income tax band should be 25%
National Treasury CS, John Mbadi, & National Assembly Finance & Planning Committee Chair, Kuria Kimani, say that a Bill is expected in the National Assembly next week to effect the PAYE changes pronounced by President Ruto two days ago (see quoted tweet).
Two key points to note:
· The lower band (i.e < Kes 32,333) is being zero-rated, personal relief is being scrapped
· There will be no changes on any other bands. This means that the 25.0%, 30.0%, 32.5% & 35.0% are being retained
Musings:
· This means we are headed for a fourth tax laws amendment cycle in 2026. We had the Capital Gains Tax changes at the start of the year, Finance Act 2026 mid-year, Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2026 a fortnight ago on VAT on petroleum products & excise & now the one due next week
· Take into consideration that as per the condensed 2027/28 budget making calendar (courtesy of the August 2027 election) we should be seeing Finance Bill 2026 by close of January 2027. Legislative fatigue is a real risk here, keen to see stakeholder engagements on next week's Bill & also Finance Bill 2027
· If Personal Relief is being scrapped as indicated (& important to flag this was part of the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy 2024/25 - FY 2026/27), it is likely that Insurance Relief will be the next casualty of this rationalisation of reliefs as part the implementation of the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy 2024/25 - FY 2026/27

Every day we lose 15-16 mothers after childbirth. Our maternal mortality is 355 per 100,000 live births. The SDG Vision 2030 was to aim for 70 per 100,000 live births. I have a educational series about this on my Instagram and TikTok.
