"It's not for me." Danai Gurira could be anywhere in the world this month. She is in Harare, in the audience at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre, watching young Zimbabwean writers, directors and actors she has spent 14 years developing through Almasi. Okoye. Michonne. Still a Convent drama girl at heart. She told Woza she sees herself as a bridge. Tony winners, NYU teachers and celebrated American playwrights have come to Harare to work with our artists through relationships she built over years. Scott Gimple, her boss on The Walking Dead, arrives in December. Her reason is the whole story: the access she was given is for others to use. That is how an industry is built. Not one star. Training, mentorship, rewriting, structure, and an audience that turns up. Africa Voices Now! runs until 6 November. Tickets are $5. Go and see the work.
