For the last 20+ years, I’ve been studying work, creativity, science, and the human condition.
Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing the best of what I’ve learned about living a life that matters. Stay tuned!
Some of the most restorative things you can do in a day are small and ordinary, and a handful of researchers have gone to the trouble of measuring what they do for us.
(Four of them turned up in the research I gathered for When) 🧵
(4) Thank someone.
Gratitude is a powerful restorative, so send a note or an e-mail to someone who's helped you.
And when Christopher Peterson's team at Michigan surveyed 12,439 American adults, gratitude ranked among the traits most closely tied to life satisfaction.
In August of 1986, less than sixty days after I graduated from college, I settled into my first job at a desk in downtown Washington, D.C.
Two of the three books I'd hand anyone starting a first real job today hadn't been written yet 🧵
I made a video on the 13 books you need to read before you're 30. These three are in it. The other ten include Man's Search for Meaning, which is probably the book I recommend most.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan was trying to unseat Jimmy Carter in a grim economy, and a week before the election the two of them met for a debate in Cleveland.
What Reagan said at the end of it worked for reasons that would have made the same words a disaster for Carter 🧵
My pro tip in the book was "Use this if your arguments are strong. If they're weak, make a statement. Or better yet, find some new arguments."
So if you're about to ask your boss "Haven't I earned a raise?" answer it yourself first, because your boss will.
I made a short video on persuasion with seven lessons. This was one of them. The other six include why a line that rhymes sounds more believable.
