After 18 months, a government investigation into mystery pollution has returned...no investigation at all. Or, at least, nothing worth publishing. Bungled samples, a 58 week wait and few answers in my latest for the Eye.

My latest from a reporting trip to Norway's Arctic north this summer:
At the Barents Observer, a Norwegian news outlet located nine miles from the Russian border, a team of Russian journalists cover their country from exile.

The SNP Government are letting down fishermen by cutting flights that monitor illegal fishing.
What makes it worse are denials from Ministers who either don’t realise the harm done, or don’t care.

My latest for the @FerretScot pulls together record requests, procurement docs, and parliamentary records to show how budget cuts continue to impact the protection of Scotland's seas:
🔴 NEW: The Scottish Government is selling surveillance planes to save money and says drones will be used to prevent illegal fishing. But critics argue that losing experienced pilots could mean criminality goes unchecked.
Our latest: theferret.scot/p/bcadd4c5-b1…
ALT Yellow-and-blue Scottish Fisheries surveillance aircraft on display, with The Ferret logo. Text reads: “Piloted flights protecting Scotland’s waters from illegal fishing have more than halved due to cutbacks.”

This is one of Norway's most pristine fjords. So why is it being used as a dumping site for mine waste? - @danswimsMCS @guardian
theguardian.com/environment/…
This summer a Norwegian town won its two-decade battle against a mine, when the Supreme Court struck down the latter’s permit to dump waste directly into a local fjord.
Then, last week, the Norwegian Government said the mine could keep dumping anyway.
What that means for environment and constitutional law: theguardian.com/environment/…
Earlier this month I got to tick off one of my all-time, bucket-list reporting experiences. Very excited to share some stories from the water soon!

My latest for @mongabay unpacks the newly minted partnership between state oil companies of Mexico and Brazil. Environmental concerns, yes, but sources also raising flags on transparency and the area likely to be developed.

My latest for @FerretScot looks at inspection reports behind the 'green-ticks' you'll see on salmon in supermarket shelves. Found some pretty gnarly details: from unofficial kit ("the Reaper") to fish so decomposed they'd turned into uncountable mush. Enjoy!
More than three quarters of Scottish salmon farms certified as “sustainable” broke the environmental rules of the certifying body last year, but none lost their accreditation, The Ferret can reveal.
