The first time I read this Molly Brodak poem, I didn’t get it. But, as a great poem does, it chipped away at me over years until one day I read it and it hit me. I couldn’t stop thinking about those last lines, so I wrote my own version to try to understand what shifted (1/3)
Molly Brodak's birthday today

The South is not a "lost cause". It's underorganized, underfunded, and relentlessly suppressed & gerrymandered. And despite it all, Black Southern voters have shown up anyway to be the conscience of this country throughout our history. I hope people realize that.

Its very entertaining to watch non-Carolinians do complex political analysis on Roy Cooper’s success —meanwhile the myriad of republican friends & family members I’ve spoken to who are voting for Roy, when I ask them why, are just like: I like him.

You’re not going to recreate the Cooper Effect by engineering candidates in red states with his exact positions. The second he entered the race, we all knew it was over because he’s a political entity in NC. The takeaway should be based around long term strategy:

we need to start building future senate candidates in red states through local, and then state-wide government—giving them a chance to govern and gain trust with the electorate. Then, when they run, the “They’re going to ruin everything” attack from the right sounds ridiculous

How simply and directly Carillo addresses what literally every tennis fan in the world already knows really shows the cowardice of almost every major male tennis commentator / analyst’s silence about Zverev
A remarkable moment on Sunday’s world feed broadcast of the U.S. Open final:

Pretty rich coming from him, considering that if Trump’s birthright citizenship order had stood Balogun would not eligible to play for the US
Trump thanks FIFA for reinstating Balogun “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

AI writing discourse reveals something I was shocked to learn when I reached my MFA: many people do not write from a place of curiosity and wanting to connect, but rather from a place of certainty and wanting to be singularly heard / seen as intelligent
This is a cool example of how you can use AI to help your writing—without relying on it for any actual writing. From @jasminewsun theatlantic.com/technology/2…

Probably an over generalization but I find most writers fall into one of two camps: writers who dedicate themselves to the work of writing because they believe in the written word’s power to connect & change people, and writers who do so because they think they specifically Know

Yep
It’s useless to fight this fight with the idea that human writers are just “better”. We saw how ai images improved, and writing will too. Denying that it’s good is not sustainable. We have to instead insist that the value is tied to the process of creation rather than the product

AI writing should be rejected based solely on the fact it was created by AI. I don’t care if it is stylistically identical to human writing—if a human is not behind it, it has no meaning to me
