About a year ago I started reading 'useful' books for the things I used to use twitter for ('hot takes'). The quality of my decisions has changed, I feel so much more grounded in facts. It makes sense. Books have to cite sources, provide evidence, solve problems. Tweets don't #ML

Today at 6:30pm CET I'm running a mastermind for PhDs who want to leave academia and want to have somewhat of a map for it. It'd continue as a community of practice if there's enough interest.I don't plan to push it or advertise it so that it grows orglly.

We can add "also a bunch of irrational beliefs!". dopamine hits
Nuance doesn't sell.
Truthness doesn't sell
Hype sells
The echo chambers and radicalization fucking up politics and civil society is only the tip of the iceberg. Our thinking processes are childish. We think badly :)

If you think that the only way to get noticed is to get followed by more people,
You're wrong.
It's not about quantity, it's about quality. 100 true fans on Twitter and you're done.

Don't make things because you see other people being makers. This is a hollow reason, and motivation will quickly wane once you're in the weeds.
Find a group of people you really want to help, and figure out how you can best empower them.

For some skills you don't have the luxury of trial an error. The skill is too complex, or it's too expensive to have multiple iterations. Examples:1/ Dating, 2/ starting businesses 3/ job interviews.Rarely do you get feedback. For those, a mentor is effective. Review what you did

This is one of the biggest risks for the EU: the total irrelevance in AI we have today, but reinforced by regulations like these. I'm willing to say this is a bigger problem than climate change (as big as that is)

Controversial opinion: Most people don't think. Or don't think clearly. The next few tweets are from ideas that I've developed together with Paco Tornay and Srdjan Santic on private chats (none of them are on twitter ☺ ).

Jesus Martinez-Blanco, PhD, a DSR alumni, a Senior Data Scientist at FlixBus, also a trainer at DSR. He completed his Phd and Post Doc in Physics before joining Data Science Retreat in 2015 and did great things at his company. What can we learn? (1/2) mtr.cool/vumhnlxkgt

In my data science journey, one of the best decisions I made was attending @dataScienceRet .
The massive alumni base this school has in Europe is amazing. The alumni base can be a big advantage in your job search after the bootcamp. 😀

For only the second time (that I can recall), I've had a confirmed talk cancelled due to my slides being heavily critical of Google & Facebook.
I won't out the organizer, but I thought I'd share the offending slides here.

I'm rereading "how to read a book" (Adler). One interesting take: "Listening is learning from a teacher who is present, while reading is learning from one who is absent." Looks like the 21st century is all about the second method more so after corona. Yet people don't read books
