Planning a VMware alternatives conversation? Bring three numbers: 1. Your renewal date (the date, not the month) 2. Allocated vs. used: VMs, vCPU, memory, storage 3. Everything built around VMware: backup, monitoring, DR, automation That third list decides the timeline.

Every colocation provider looks the same on a tour. The real test is the first time something breaks at 2 a.m. and nobody from your team is nearby. Ask: Who answers? What can remote hands actually do? What's the median response time, not the SLA headline?

Northern Virginia data center vacancy: 0.2%. Just 10.8 MW available in the whole market (CBRE, H1 2026). 80%+ of new construction is already preleased. New supply is real. Most of it is spoken for. We have availability in Ashburn and Sterling: datacanopy.com/inventory

Most colocation contracts get read for the day you move in. The expensive clauses are about the day you leave: Escalators: fixed or CPI? Termination: does the fee decline over the term? Assignment: can it move with you if you're acquired? The rate is the easy part.

An 18-person infrastructure team at a life insurer owned everything: servers, network, security, DR, facilities. Their AVP's verdict: "Data center management can be a time vampire." They moved production and DR into colocation, kept their systems, and got their hours back.

Many colocation buyers draw only 10-17% of the power they committed to. In 2026 every overcommitted kW is priced at a scarcity rate, and metered power can add $100-150/kW on top. Before you renew: pull 90 days of actual draw per circuit. Compare. Right-size.
4
A defense contractor asked for a 400-amp European-style circuit for an ML cabinet. What the cabinet actually needed: a standard 208V three-phase circuit. Same 20 kW rack. Installation fees avoided: $1M+. Spec the workload, not the circuit.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Your firewall gets audited every year. Who has a key to the server room? HIPAA, PCI-DSS and SOC 2 all expect physical access to be controlled, logged and provable. Can you produce the last 90 days of access to your hardware?

A partner asked us to quote two cabinets for a DC financial services firm whose data center AC was leaking. Discovery found aging hardware, an ad hoc network, end-of-life operating systems, and no security monitoring. We rebuilt it. $800K/year projected became $288K. Down 64%.
9
"How much space do you have?" is the wrong first question. A data hall with white space and no committed power is a warehouse. Ask when the power energizes. Ask who carries the slip if the utility misses. Transformer lead times run close to 3 years.

An MSP serving 100+ healthcare facilities had hundreds of separate contracts with one competitor, all at retail. We consolidated them onto private cloud with a 39-month ramp so nobody paid twice. Costs down 35-40%. Footprint down 30%. Ramp finished in 12 months.

September 10 is the statistical peak of Atlantic hurricane season. Most DR failures we audit are not missing plans. They are DR sites in the same metro as production, backups never test-restored, runbooks written by someone who left. Geographic separation is the fix.
8
A large MSP needed space in several markets. Each meant a new MSA, a new legal cycle, a new negotiation. We gave them one agreement covering every location. Procurement got 67% faster, and the reserved growth space was in use within six months (+41%).

A real estate investment firm came to us after a breach at their previous provider and three days of downtime. Their DR had never been implemented correctly, so recovery took longer than the incident. Rebuilt with geographic DR at $192K/year against $408K projected. 53% less.

The most expensive line in a cloud bill is usually the one nobody modeled: egress. One customer paying $20K/month in AWS egress cut it roughly in half by moving onto private connectivity. Same cloud, different path. The public internet is a default, not a decision.

A federal agency started with us at 50 kW and finished at more than 500. Pricing on power instead of square footage let them right-size continuously. Dropping cabinet density from 5 kW to 3.5 kW saved $425,000 a year. Flexibility isn't a discount.

Two facilities. Same operator. Same SLA. One prices power at ~$200/kW. The other at ~$350. The difference is occupancy, and nobody publishes it. You can't negotiate your way out of a full building. You can only find a different one. datacanopy.com/inventory
