as a big geology and archeology nerd, here’s a little fun fact about this amazing geological giant :) the "Great Australian Bight" can often be described as a geological time capsule because it’s been tectonically stable for millions of years. since Australia split from Antarctica(approx. 85 m.y.a), sediments and fossils settled slowly and stayed largely undisturbed, preserving long records of ancient oceans, sea level changes, and past climate shifts that can still be seen in the multitude of layers along its limestone cliffs. another interesting detail is that the Bight sits above vast ancient carbonate platforms that were built almost entirely by marine organisms. over millions of years, the shells and skeletons of tiny sea creatures accumulated, slowly forming the limestone that now makes up its towering coastal cliffs. archaeologically, the stability of the Bight’s cliffs and coastal platforms has helped preserve long-lasting landforms that early humans (the Aboriginal people) may have navigated around ~50,000 years ago. rock shelters, elevated terraces, and ancient shorelines along the Bight provide important context for understanding how ancient Aboriginal communities interacted with the coast, using it as a source of food, travel, and cultural connection over long periods of time. i just think it’s so incredible how this single stretch of coastline can hold eons of oceanic and tectonic history alongside tens of thousands of years of brilliant human and cultural stories, shaped by learning how to live with and appreciate what others may see as seemingly empty, harsh and treacherous environments.
