I wrote about my experience on the industry job market as a PhD student in an AI-adjacent field (HCI): kjfeng.me/blog/industry-job-…. If you’re wrapping up your PhD, didn’t focus on LLM training, and thinking about industry jobs, this one’s for you!
Alex crushed it. The paper introduces new ways to measure how hard ideas are to articulate to AI. Shared social norms are especially difficult.
Lots to explore for law-following AI e.g. how do we convey why an ambulance should be exempt from a park's ban on vehicles?
So excited for this research! I've always been annoyed at the supremacy of verified rewards, and now we can finally show it.
In this work, we develop ways of measuring: how much of a reward signal is verifiable, how much can we put into words, and how much is shared but tacit, or impossible to articulate?

Extensions, ongoing and future work:
Anyone who talked to me during this period probably heard a lot about “articulabilty gaps” but the more I started looking at them, the more I started seeing them everywhere. I'll talk about some of these future directions now.
I’m convinced that tacit knowledge is everywhere, and is the key missing variable for making progress on frontier tasks. I have a number of follow-up projects, please reach out!

🚨New work: A SOTA prompt optimization framework + a novel unsupervised measure of prompt performance.
Written rubrics and constitutions are crucially important for AI task improvement, safety following, pluralism and adaptation.
But some of the things we might want a rubric to do are difficult to put into words; how would you even describe “comic voice”? I’m human, albeit not that funny, and I'm totally not sure what that means.
What kinds of written constructs can you expect your judge to do well on and how good can you expect it to be?

We’re hiring summer fellows.
Send us your standout law students, the gov/firm lawyers looking to make a switch, and that old law school classmate whose recently gotten really into AI.
I encourage any lawyers/law students interested in AI governance to apply to @law_ai_'s Summer Research Fellowship. You'd get guidance from some of the sharpest minds on law & AI (or me).

So this is what, 20 new Ford Foundations’ worth of public benefit funding? Four Novo Nordisks?
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit.
It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion.
In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding.
In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.

LawAI is hiring at two levels to scale its new Academic Programs team.
The team’s goal is to find and support researchers that are doing the most important legal and policy work on advanced AI. We already run the Legal Frontiers Seasonal Research Fellowship, the Law & AI Academic Fellowship, and workshops including on Law-Following AI. We want to expand what we offer, potentially including grantmaking, fiscal sponsorship, a paid guest blog from leading scholars, and dedicated compute for empirical research.
• The Director of Academic Programs will work closely with our Managing Director of Research, Cullen O’Keefe, to define the strategy and build the team.
• The Academic Programs Manager will design and execute programs end-to-end, including communications, talent management, events management, logistics, and analytics.
Applicants may apply for both roles, which are open until November 1, 2026. Read the full job description and apply using the link in the comments.

Job Opportunity: Lawyers, come join @AnthropicAI for a 4-month fellowship!!
Law is a field where it’s notoriously hard to define quality, and there’s so much interesting and important work to be done here.

I'm looking for technical scouts to find the world's best researchers whose dreams don't fit into academic lab- or venture capital-shaped boxes
It is, first and foremost, an ideas job. Flexible on work arrangement. Technical vision must be first-rate.

Curious if people have thoughts on this. What, to your mind, would be a Millennium Prize-level challenge in law?

I took a quick look through Pangram's new WildAI dataset of 96 million web pages and found 2,967 flagged .gov pages, including press releases, policy materials, and public notices.

🫵Are YOU an economist, AI researcher, or otherwise interested in measuring AI’s impact on people and society?
We wrote a paper to make your life easier: we conducted dozens of hours of expert interviews, transcript analysis, and research to identify 9 challenges in AI RCTs/human uplift studies and 9 fixes to make your research more rigorous.
We also mapped each challenge to the type of validity it threatens (construct, internal, external), and its degree of LLM-specificity.
Amidst questions about RSI and the societal implications of frontier AI, we hope this work can support stronger measurement and transparency towards more informed decision-making.
Catch @kevinlwei presenting this work at @AIESConf in Malmö this month. S/o to our coauthors @ShenZhouHong @dbateyko @xave_rg @thecarsonezell @valeriechen_ @umangsbhatt.

PS - before working in AI auditing/evals/governance, I spent five years designing and running causal inference research, including large-scale human-subject RCTs. I’m excited about raising the ceiling at the intersection of these worlds. Check out these comments from a great economist. Hope this work can help others too!

New in The Atlantic:
@dgrobinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches.
He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.”
