"Regardless of midterm results". What if the results show AES trailing Benson by 2? What then?
As Nate Silver suggested, the four- or five-point candidate quality gap between Jocelyn Benson and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan is an example of the sort of self-inflicted injury the Democrats wouldn’t have to deal with, had they nominated a centrist appropriate for that state. Regardless of midterm results, the Dems need to have an internal reckoning with the left. We can’t let them keep damaging us.

This is AMAZING and brings alaska back to the glory years of the 1980s. Absurd that you have to fly from ANC to Seattle to get to Tokyo given the geography. Also, there is MASSIVE tourism demand in Asia.
Alaska is going to fly a 737 from Anchorage to Tokyo. It's one of the most surprising route moves I've seen in years. The route just showed up on Alaska's website: Anchorage to Tokyo Narita, daily in summer, on a 737 MAX 8. Anchorage is offering about $500,000 in fee breaks to get it. Anchorage used to be the stop on the way to Tokyo. During the Cold War, flights between Europe and Japan refueled there because they couldn't cross the Soviet Union. Northwest flew Anchorage-Tokyo in the 1990s too. Once Russia opened its airspace and planes could fly farther, nobody needed the stop. So why now? In Tokyo you can connect to Japan Airlines, Alaska's partner, for the rest of Japan and Asia. And Anchorage doesn't have to fill the plane by itself. Alaska flew nonstop to Anchorage from 16 cities this summer, from Boston to Honolulu. I'd expect more of those, timed to connect to Tokyo. On paper it's 3,425 miles. Alaska's longest MAX 8 flight today is Seattle to Reykjavik at 3,611. But the shortest path runs right past Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, and U.S. airlines can't fly over Russia. Swing around that and you're past 3,750 miles. The diversion airports on the way are places like Cold Bay and Adak. I also wanted to see what else a MAX 8 could reach from Anchorage. Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, and Nagoya are all closer than Seattle-Reykjavik. Osaka, Seoul, and Beijing only fit inside Boeing's 4,028-mile maximum, which is a best case. Shanghai and Taipei are out. If Tokyo works, Sapporo is the next one. It's 420 miles closer.

This could be an indicator that the likely voter screens have been too red calibrated.

No comment on the bigoted ads against Muslims coming from the Republican side.

Matt Yglesias Is Confidently Wrong About Everything
Earnest take: I think it’s probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don’t live in.

Lions got hit with that exact roughing call two weeks ago. You cannot leave your feet at the QB, period--even if you do exactly what the rules dictate (which Brooks did). They're calling it every time.

If Lula wins this, he has to be the greatest politician in history, right? Not sure who would even come close

How did Lula come from behind to crush Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in 1st round and won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. 2nd round turnout usually below 1st.

I love Lula because he's one of the few politicians internationally that unites the US Left in support. From DSA types to Obama centrists.
Lula wins. Why that matters so much.

Huge respect to the organizers, activists and voters of Brazil and Serbia. These results are due to so much work and they give us so much hope. There is nothing inevitable about the far right.

The is one of many reasons why two-round elections are superior to one-round elections.
Flavio screwed up by opening his mouth after winning the 1st round. He got cocky, acted like he'd already won. His team started talking about what he planned to do. It freaked people out and turned enough undecideds against him. His actual policy ideas are very unpopular!

The Cheesecake Factory is a restaurant??? I thought it was a kitschy pâtisserie chain that specialized in cheesecakes.
I adore Barack Obama, but I'll also say this: if a Cheesecake Factory opened up in the Burlington Vermont area (assuming it got through the gauntlet of zoning and protesters it would inevitably face), it would immediately be one of the 10-15 nicest restaurants in the county.

As Ukrainians have noticed, even Russophone "liberals" like @juliaioffe have culturally imperialist attitudes. They talk about Ukraine like Belgian intellectuals in the 1920s talked about the Congo.
The “best best” case sounds like fantasy. Why would the toppling of Ukraine and Zelensky be a “best” case? Look i don’t think you’re on Russias side or anything. But yesterday you attacked Zelensky for “mishandling” Trump. And the biggest enemy in the US politically speaking for Ukraine, are the Megan mobbs types who want us to believe that one more time on their knees in front of Trump is all Ukraine needs. Meanwhile those of us who have actually fought with Trump know that he only responds to strength. Not begging

You clearly got the battlefield predictions wrong, like literally every single commentator did that day. But why lie about it? Why not just admit you were wrong? The best case scenario for Ukraine was not peacefully surrendering and embracing puppet state status.
Replying to @AdamKinzinger
Adam, this is insanely disingenuous. Watch the whole interview—which was taped on the first day of the full-scale invasion, when no one knew how it would go and where I make very clear that I am horrified by it all. I have never hidden whose side I’m on in this war—and it’s not Russia’s.
28
Why lie? That's not what you said. You said the best case scenario is Ukraine's decapitation, surrender, and transformation into an puppet state so subservient to Putin a Russian occupation force wouldn't be necessary. Again, why lie? Why not just admit you were wrong?
Here’s the rest of the interview where I say the best best case scenario is that Ukraine wins and drives the Russians out. And that Ukrainians fighting for their democracy ought to be an inspiration for all of us.

We just saw the dumbest play call in Michigan football history. Trailing Indiana 6-0, UM has third and goal from the 1. OC Jason Beck calls for freshman Tommy Carr to roll out and try to hit the Rhino guy, Beigel. Sacked. Missed FG. That's arrogance and stubborness from Beck.

My strong, STRONG advice, is that anyone telling you Early Vote data has ANY predictive value whatsoever, and obsessively updates new EV data, is full of it and straight up not worth your time. No matter how fancy the graph or chart, garbage is still garbage.
