Big app news: Comcast has finally released a version of its Xfinity app for Apple TV, allowing customers to stream their cable subscriptions more easily. Bonus: it's a brand new UI, which will roll out on Apple first before other platforms. I've used

What's *not* depressing? Unlike so many such virtual events from entertainment companies, the speakers so far haven't been mostly middle-aged white men. Multiple speakers who are women and people of color. They all still speak Corporate Exec, but...progress!
ComcastNBCUniversalPeacock is having an advertiser conference today, and, like Apple's recent events, the motif is "top execs in completely emptied by COVID lobbies." It's actually a bit depressing?

My full tweet thread on the top @Xfinity VOD shows for 2020 (Jan-Nov) is now complete, for anyone so interested. Happy New Year!
Always lots of year-end lists for TV. Nielsen is the standard, but on demand stats offer insights as well. I like to look at @Xfinity’s data, since it’s the nation’s biggest cable system+has streaming only customers+it is in many states. So what did we watch in 2020? A thread:

On Peacock streaming service: Sees it as a sort of 'next-generation' broadcast network, filled with procedurals and comedies. Peacock has seen over 26M sign-ups as of yesterday, w/o Olympics and originals

AT&T's John Stankey is promising a "superior user experience" with HBO Max. I wonder if he's ever used the DirecTV app? That is not a superior experience, even compared to old school companies such as Comcast (Xfinity is pretty good, IMO)

So the user experience with X1 is actually better (IMO) than virtually every cord cutting experience I've seen. But then it comes down to price. (2/2)
I finally cut the cord and got rid of cable TV. What I’ve found is TV over internet isn’t just cheaper than cable — it’s an all-around better consumer experience, with everything I liked about cable plus new features. You should cut the cord too. nymag.com/intelligencer/2019…

This isn't a fair critique of all cable. Comcast (Yes, my parent co) X1 is a different user experience than other cable cos/Verizon, because of the voice-controlled remote & built-in Netflix/Amazon Prime. (I.e. I say a show on Netflix/Prime into the remote & it pops up) (1/2)
