Necro-Economics: Death By Algorithm Eyal Weizman in London Review of Books Excerpt: The killing of civilians and the destruction of civilian property can also be used as an act of terror and revenge. During the 2006 Lebanon War, Israel destroyed fifteen thousand buildings and a large part of the Beirut suburb of Dahiya, a stronghold of Hizbullah. In 2008, it announced that the destruction of cities would be the cornerstone of its deterrence. Gadi Eisenkot – then commander of Israel’s northern front, and, as I write, the man challenging Netanyahu in the Israeli elections on 27 October – explained that the ‘Dahiya doctrine’ would see Israel retaliate with ‘disproportionate power ... and cause immense damage and destruction’. Along with the explicit threat to target civilians, the use of the term ‘disproportionate’ is crucial here. It was meant both literally – Israel is using its overwhelming firepower without restraint to flatten urban areas – and legally: Israel is flouting the laws of war, in which the principle of proportionality is key. If the use of proportionality is taken to suggest support for the ethical, measured, rational waging of war, disproportionate action publicly demonstrates an unwillingness to be restrained by any legal or normative threshold and a genocidal willingness to kill civilians en masse. The Dahiya doctrine was applied in the massive rounds of terror bombing that Israel unleashed on Gaza in the winter of 2008-9, the summer of 2014 and again in the spring of 2021, in which thousands of Palestinian civilians were killed and tens of thousands of homes destroyed. In between those assaults, another form of calculation was imposed on Gaza, with a relentless siege meant to keep Palestinians on the threshold of life. A military document called ‘Red Lines’ set the minimum number of calories required to sustain Gaza’s population at a level just above the UN definition of hunger (2100 calories a day for men, 1700 for women and a varying amount for children depending on gender and age). The total number of calories was translated into the tonnage required to feed Gaza’s then population of 1.5 million and thus the number of aid trucks allowed into the territory. The same went for megawatts of electricity and litres of fuel and water. What was seen as good behaviour was rewarded by an increase in the amounts coming in, any acts of resistance by the tightening of the siege, like a population-scale version of a Milgram experiment ... Yet as one of NAZA’s interviewees confirms, with seventy thousand Palestinians designated as military targets and default collateral damage set at twenty civilians for every low-level operative (and more than a hundred for military and political leaders), ‘in this way you could kill the entirety of Gaza.’ As another interviewee explains, ‘the aim was quantity not quality,’ but – as Stalin said – ‘quantity has a quality all its own.’ Genocide is the sum total of individually targeted strikes. This is what the technology researcher Júlia Nueno Guitart, writing about the use of AI in Gaza, has labelled ‘individuated mass killing’. The killing of civilians and the destruction of homes and infrastructure was the intent, not the ‘collateral effect’, of the bombing; as technologists often say, ‘it was a feature not a bug.’ @weizman_eyal @LRB lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/n20/…

Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Benjamin Moser says Israel is "actively fomenting" antisemitism by claiming to act in the name of all Jews: "It's asking a lot of people to say that there's this Jewish army of this Jewish state with this Jewish star on their flag, and they are mercilessly slaughtering tens of thousands of children, but don't confuse them with Jews," Moser said. He argues that the reported rise in antisemitism is simply a rise in anti-Zionism, "people reacting to Israel and the evil, wicked things that Israel has been doing in our names."

The Hannibal Directive (also known as the Hannibal Procedure or Hannibal Protocol) is a highly controversial military policy used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) designed to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers by enemy forces. The core operating principle of the classified directive is to use maximum force to stop a kidnapping, even at the risk of harming or killing the captive forces or nearby civilians.

🗳️ The Democratic Socialists of America is launching a national campaign for an arms embargo on Israel, built on organizing workers, unions and communities to choke off weapons shipments at strategic points rather than waiting for Washington. The campaign's first targets include United Airlines, which DSA says moved nearly 3,000 military shipments to Tel Aviv through US hubs between June 2025 and March 2026, and Elbit Systems of America, the US arm of Israel's largest weapons maker, now rebranded as Twenty-Six Defense. The national launch builds on New York City DSA's "Break the Chain" campaign, which has spent months organizing workers at JFK Airport to refuse to handle military cargo bound for Israel. DSA is set to hold a webinar Thursday to the effort.
As the genocide in Palestine continues and violence intensifies across the West Bank, the call for an arms embargo has never been more critical. DSA is proposing a total embargo that extends beyond just arms shipments. Join us on 10/29 for our launch - go.dsausa.org/arms-embargo-l…

¡Basta! FB: Novedades Sucumbíos

WSJ confirms that Saudi officers were in charge of the operations at Al-Alam camp and that Saudi officers were killed in the strikes. They also confirm that Saudi officers have been killed/wounded in recent strikes in Aden.
The YAF announces that they carried out an attack on the Al-Alam camp in Shabwa, resulting in dozens of casualties. I’ve seen some pictures/videos and their assessment seems accurate. They also claim that Saudi officers were present at this camp.

🇷🇸 🚨 BREAKING: Serbia's Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat to the student-led movement that has spent nearly two years in the streets trying to oust him. "Based on the sample, it is clear that we have lost these elections," Vučić said at his party's headquarters. He put the Student List at about 2.2 million votes to 1.72 million for his bloc. That works out to 130 to 140 of parliament's 250 seats, a clear majority. Official results are pending. Vučić has ruled Serbia as prime minister or president since 2014. In that time his party took over state institutions, and he was accused of muzzling critical media. He resigned the presidency last month to run for prime minister. The movement erupted in November 2024, after a newly renovated train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, Serbia's second-largest city, and killed 16 people. Students blamed corruption and rallied behind the cry "Pumpaj," Serbian for "pump it," meaning keep up the pressure.
REPORT | Tens of thousands of people from across Serbia are marching to Belgrade for what is expected to be a massive demonstration against the government of President Aleksandar Vučić. Serbia has seen sustained, almost daily, protests for months since November when a train station roof collapsed in the second largest city Novi Sad, killing 15 people. Protesters have blamed rampant corruption for the disaster and since then the protests have swelled with many demanding the resignation of the government, which they denounce as a fundamentally corrupt institution. Vučić has vowed to use force against the protesters in Belgrade tonight and groups of his supporters have also taken up positions in Belgrade, raising fears of violent clashes. Journalist Dušan Čavic (@sedamdeseti) co-host of the popular YouTube show @MarkaZvaka, is covering the demonstration for Drop Site. VIDEO: Protesters chanting “Pumpaj!” (“Pump it up!”) as they march from New Belgrade (Novi Beograd) to the center of Belgrade.
