I don't think anyone is arguing that moving away from hybrid join solves all issues, but let's look at what actually changes: Windows Firewall enabled and set to Public profile - Crushes lateral movement No domain admin or legacy admin groups - Crushes escalation paths
Moving endpoints out of Active Directory reduces the attack surface of Active Directory but NOT the whole organization. Thats an important distinction. The risk endpoints present doesn’t magically go away when you move to intune joining them.

Tales from the trenches: Real life assume breach of a cloud-only org *No on-prem Active Directory domain. 90% fully remote company. Started from a Mac with an account to login to the Mac and a cloud-only account. I ended up getting access to their production containers deployment management plane. I could run commands as root on thousands of containers. Not only that…. I found numerous ssh keys in their cloud-only document repositories. I found credential in their ticketing platform. I found credentials in slack. I even found conversations where they were talking about the pentest. 😅 Cloud only is not without its challenges. Active Directory is also not without its challenges. Both have their advantages. Both require hard work and effort to maintain and secure. This idea that “pentesters get domain admin too easily in Active Directory therefore it’s insecure” just doesn’t fly with me. Cloud-only orgs can be just as “insecure.” This organization by the way, you would for sure recognize the name if I told you.

RAPID RESPONSE: Huntress has become aware of a widespread security incident involving ConnectWise Cloud Backup (formerly SkyKick). We’ve confirmed that an unknown threat actor abused the access they obtained in SkyKick to pivot to access customers' Microsoft 365 environments. 🧵

Change is coming, and you should turn this setting off in Microsoft Entra > ourcloudnetwork.com/microsof… Soon, Microsoft are giving us all a reason to need to buy Agent 365, by making Agent Identity Blueprints (which serve as the foundation of Agent properties and policies) able to be created by standard Microsoft 365 users. While we encourage users to self-service create their own Agents, Blueprints, which should be governed and controlled by those defining and managing your AI governance, should not be self-service created. #Entra #Microsoft #Agents

Measuring your progress against others is a sure fire path to constant disappointment. Measure your progress against where you started, where you’ve been, where you were yesterday. It’s far more rewarding and informative to evaluate yourself against yourself.

Secure defaults in Entra is great. It’s a net benefit for orgs who don’t know any better or are just spinning up tenants. Thats exactly the orgs it’s made for and that’s fine. Microsoft has done a great thing by offering this. It’s helped mitigate password spraying and credential stuffing attacks. But there is more to do to secure an Entra tenant. We can’t let the conversation stop there.

I have designed environments for Gov, Defence/Mil suppliers, worked inside some mil orgs, CNI and a whole range of orgs..... (and built, tested, operated, recovered etc.), I have been doing 'tech/sec' stuff for a fairly decent bit of time.. I do not come on here to make money from posting. (I don't get paid for engagement on social media, I don't give a fuck about engagement other than having fun and learning/sharing with people). I do think it's important for society, our profession to actually educate people and where appropriate resist nonsense/disinformation/misinformation etc. I love the work we do, I love (most of) the people in the community... this place is fucking fun/funny/useful/insane.... but I do really think there's a thing here that it's our responsibility as cyber professionals to use science, truth and data and not FUD.

This AAD vs AD drama is great because nobody sets up either one correctly.
