I got the call at 3am that my brother had killed himself. Instead of crying or reacting emotionally at all I had to go wake up my mom and tell her that her son was dead and be there for her. Because while I’d lost a brother, she’d lost a child.
When men have responsibility they don’t get the luxury of immediate emoting, they have to carry themselves to carry others.
The people in that court room had families, those families lost sons, daughters, mothers, and more. Superman is a symbol of hope for them. Superman is the Super-Man, the Super-Father, the Super-Brother, his burden is the entire world. He doesn’t get to just break down. He must be a Man of Steel.
Snyder’s Superman was absolutely “it” if you have any indication of what a Man is.

You need to understand something. And this is where context is everything. That’s my grandfather. Lt Col Bertram W Wilson. He was a Tuskegee Airman with the 302nd and 100th Fighter Squadron. He took that photo coming back from the Berlin bombing mission that was the finale of the movie RED TAILS (he flew on that mission). Those Swastikas on his plane are for KILLING NAZIS. Blowing them out of the sky. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross TWICE over the course of a twenty year military career. He was no supporter of Nazis and fought injustice his whole life. Fuck NAZIs and FUCK @kanyewest

During WW2 American soldiers often painted symbols on their planes including “kill marks.” The swastica was painted to represent an aerial victory over the Nazis. Similarly they may have painted a rising sun after a victory against Japan.

Jesuits are always supposed to give people the benefit of the doubt. So even though I find this deeply offensive, I will presume that Mr. Trump meant this light-heartedly (even though he had just recently returned from Pope Francis's Funeral Mass, and he has a Catholic Vice President who met with Francis the day before his death). But imagine the incandescent outrage, the swift condemnation, and the individual and joint protests from the US bishops if this had been done by Joe Biden or Barack Obama.
