The Plastic Crisis —
In the last @theallinpod episode, David Friedberg breaks down the problems with plastics…
Long story short, phthalates and plastics (synthetic polymers) are in everything. There’s no escaping them.
They’re in our food, our water, our air, and in us.
This is bad news, since they disrupt our hormones and increase our cancer risk…
But in the wise words of Winston Churchill, the boys and I can “never let a good crisis go to waste.”

based. every man must go through a "no drinking, grindset, lone wolf sigma" arc before remembering that there's tons of alpha in just being a cool happy dude who enjoys a beer for a few hours a week with people he loves. Also philosophy goes way harder after some ale
Each young man carries within him the good news of his time.
As Paul and Barnabas traveled far and wide, well-received by some, and run out of town by others, so does the young man.
He holds within him the entirety of history, like a slingshot pulled back, loaded with potential.
You can hate him, and you can love him. You can fear him, or find him foolish.
But simply believing in him saves you.
Because he is mankind. And how in the world could you ever bet against it?
Now, to be clear, belief in the young “bringer of news”, will not necessarily save your soul.
It’ll probably make your lifetime more pleasant, but your soul can only be saved through belief in God.
But believing in, and stoking the flame of the young man, will take you far.
The only reasons not to breathe life in to such young men are that you fear the sexual competition that arises in his virility, or increased competition for other resources, which the young star in ages past may have brought.
But today, the young man increases the size of the pie. He is positive sum. He creates endlessly. And there’s more than enough for us all.
You can never go wrong cultivating such a man. The coming cohorts are all we have!
One thing that’s cool about surfing is that you have no choice but to surrender to the ocean. If you fight it, you get hurt. Go loose you are saved, and may have the chance to enjoy it
Nothing wrong with polos and cargo shorts…
But the goal is NOT just to think well.
It’s to sell your ideas well too. And doing so is far easier in good clothes

Taste in *clothing* isn't important. If your goal is to think well, clothing should just be as comfortable as possible.
You don’t looksmaxx for the sake of looksmaxxing. You looksmaxx so that you will be listened to and believed in when you carry important messages from the Lord
Definitely a corporate blunder. But I don’t think it was because they’re evil.
Oil/petchem execs were retarded, and protecting what they had.
AI is coming for plastic recycling.
plastic recycling is one of the most successful corporate frauds in history and everyone fell for it
in the 1980s the plastic industry faced regulation that would've killed their business
their solution was to spend $50 million convincing you that recycling would fix everything, while their own internal documents proved they knew only <10% of plastic was recyclable
they lied deliberately. with documentation.
the results of their fraud:
- 9% of plastic ever produced has been recycled. total. in 70 years
- 450 million tons produced annually
- 130 million tons entering the environment every year
- microplastics in your blood, your brain, your testicles, your children
but here's where it becomes genuinely evil
wealthy countries "recycle" by shipping 50-60% of their waste to developing nations. UK exports to poor countries rose 84% last year
what happens when it arrives?
nothing
no infrastructure. 70% ends up in open dumps, burned in fields, or carried by rivers into the ocean
you sorted your bottles. you felt virtuous. and a container ship carried your garbage to a village in indonesia where children play next to mountains of western plastic waste that will poison their water supply for generations
that's what your recycling bin does. it launders your guilt while exporting ecological destruction to people too poor to refuse
the plastic industry didn't solve pollution. they didn't even try. they spent $50 million making it your fault and your problem, then shipped the consequences to the third world
and it worked. for 40 years. while they made trillions
every executive who signed off on this belongs in prison. every document they buried should be evidence at trial. this wasn't negligence. it was calculated, documented, deliberate poisoning of the planet for profit
but instead they'll retire rich and you'll keep sorting bottles that end up in the ocean anyway
Plastic recycling is frontier-technology, and going to improve civilization dramatically in the coming decades.
Key issues that make it seem fake:
-sorting and collection should NOT be the consumer’s problem, and with blue bins and guilt-trip marketing campaigns, we’ve been tricked in to thinking our problem and our fault (AI and robotics fixes this, see Amazon-backed Glacier)
-there had been no true method for recovering full value from contaminated plastic waste streams until we had AI-evolved enzymes — very new.
-the costs (energy mostly) have been too high because pyrolysis/pyrolysis was smart-sounding BS, and that became the gold standard for “advanced” plastic recycling. Biocatalytic recycling is superior in every way
-plastic recycling has been hijacked by decel, woke types with no grounding in capital markets, when in reality it’s an opportunity for Petrochemical Hegemony v2, where America comes out on top
Consumer-level recycling is woke, fake news. The blue bins are a feel-good lie.
Industrial-level plastic recycling is going to be massively important in the coming decades
At the very least, plastic recycling when done right:
-Reduces American dependency on China (China makes the most plastic, and exports it to the USA in the form of electronic parts, food packaging, textiles & more)
-Allows the 91%+ of plastic that ISN’T recycled to become low-cost feedstock for MORE plastics in the USA
-Reduces reproductive harm to populations, especially America’s, by reducing environmental microplastics
Plastic recycling as a woke academic concept has been replaced by fast moving capitalists who see all the money ($650 billion/year) we’re throwing out every year by having bad plastic recycling infrastructure
You need to use a paper straw 5 times to break even on water use and co2 emissions vs. a traditional plastic straw.
Meanwhile paper straws lasts a few minutes before making your beverage experience terrible
Plastics have a major branding problem
Going to Austin this weekend to meet/kick it with scientific collaborator at UT Austin.
We’re making synthetic organisms that recover value from ignored waste streams.
Anyone who thinks that sounds cool want to connect? BBQ on me
