Ambassador @MAshrafHaidari: "Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at a crossroads. As of April this year, the world counted more than 122 million people forcibly displaced — the highest in modern history. That means one in every 65 people on Earth has been forced to flee their home. Imagine for a moment if one-third of Indiana’s population were uprooted overnight, carrying only what they could on their backs, with no certainty of shelter, safety, or food. That is the daily reality for millions.
Behind these numbers are children unable to attend school, parents separated from their families, and entire communities stripped of dignity and identity. And their displacement is driven not by one factor, but by three converging forces: conflict, climate, and poverty — the triple crises of our fragile world.
Two and a half thousand years ago, Euripides wrote: 'There is no greater sorrow on Earth than the loss of one’s native land.' That remains true today. No one leaves home willingly. People flee only when staying becomes more dangerous than the perilous journey ahead."

Displaced International congratulates President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his electoral victory and welcomes his continued commitment to humanitarian protection and the inclusion of refugees, migrants, and stateless people in Brazilian society.
Under President Lula’s leadership, Brazil has strengthened coordination across government to expand access to healthcare, education, housing, social protection, employment, and other pathways toward self-reliance. This rights-based approach recognizes displaced people not simply as recipients of assistance, but as individuals whose skills, experiences, and aspirations can contribute to their host country.
“President Lula’s call to ‘treat with great respect the people who are coming to Brazil out of the need to survive’ reflects the humanity at the heart of refugee protection. Displaced International warmly welcomes this commitment. At a time when too many governments are closing their doors, Brazil’s recognition that refugees, migrants, and stateless people deserve dignity, protection, and opportunities to rebuild their lives offers an important example. We look forward to President Lula’s continued leadership in translating these principles into inclusive policies and reliable access to protection for all displaced people,” said Ambassador Ashraf Haidari, Founder and President of Displaced International.
DI also encourages the new administration to build on this progress by safeguarding access to asylum at Brazil’s borders, upholding non-refoulement, and ensuring that admission controls never prevent people facing persecution or grave danger from seeking protection.

NEW DI OP-ED: The Forgotten Women of the Congo: Uprooted by Conflict, Displaced from the World’s Attention
Conflict uproots women twice—first from their homes, and then from the world’s attention.
In this new Displaced Voices op-ed, Jordan Magee examines the escalating crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed conflict and mass displacement expose women and girls to sexual violence, exploitation, hunger, unsafe journeys, insecure camps, and severely limited healthcare.
The scale is devastating: tens of thousands of sexual-violence cases have been documented, with approximately one-third of the victims under 18. In North Kivu alone, Médecins Sans Frontières treated nearly 40,000 women for sexual violence in 2024. Behind every statistic is a survivor facing physical trauma, social stigma, interrupted education, poverty, and an uncertain future.
The international community must ensure that displaced Congolese women and girls are not treated as an afterthought. They must be seen, heard, protected, and supported through survivor-centered healthcare, psychosocial assistance, legal protection, education, and pathways to economic self-reliance.

NEW DI OP-ED - Legacies of Displacement: The Circassians of Turkey
More than 160 years after their mass expulsion from the North Caucasus, Circassians continue to carry the consequences of forced displacement across generations.
In this new op-ed, Joshua Marsh examines the Circassians’ 1864 exodus, their resettlement across the Ottoman Empire, and the development of Turkey’s Circassian community—the world’s largest. Despite remarkable resilience, assimilation, urbanization, language loss, barriers to return, and limited recognition of historical injustice threaten their cultural heritage.
The article calls for expanded Circassian-language education, stronger protection of endangered languages and traditions, greater recognition of the 1864 expulsions, and fewer barriers to cultural exchange and voluntary return.
Displacement is not only the loss of home. When history remains unrecognized and languages disappear, it can also mean the gradual loss of identity, memory, and belonging.

DI STATEMENT: DO NOT RETURN AFGHANS TO DANGER
Displaced International fully endorses the warning issued by UN human rights experts and is even more alarmed by reports that EU Member States are deporting—or preparing to deport—Afghans to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
Afghanistan’s human-rights situation remains dire. Women and girls face widespread and systematic gender persecution, while minorities, human-rights defenders, journalists, former security personnel, public servants, and other vulnerable groups risk torture, arbitrary detention, extrajudicial killing, and other grave abuses. The UN experts reaffirm that non-refoulement prohibits returns to such dangers, requires individualized risk assessments and due process, and cannot be circumvented through diplomatic assurances.
DI calls on all states—especially European states—to halt involuntary returns to Afghanistan, preserve access to asylum, and expand safe and lawful protection pathways. Deportation arrangements with the Taliban must neither endanger Afghans nor normalize its system of repression.
“Europe cannot condemn the Taliban’s gender persecution and other gross abuses while returning Afghans to the very coercive system they fled. Non-refoulement is a binding legal obligation—not a policy option that can be discarded for domestic political convenience. All states, especially European democracies founded on human rights and the rule of law, must halt involuntary returns, conduct rigorous individualized protection assessments, and never send an Afghan to persecution, torture, arbitrary detention, or death.”

Pleased to have met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for an important discussion on forced displacement.
Peace is essential to addressing the conflicts that force people to flee. Development creates the conditions for lasting solutions. And international cooperation remains indispensable.
China is a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention. I welcomed its support for UNHCR and its reaffirmed commitment to helping address these shared challenges.
📢 DI ADVOCACY | GIVE OTHERS A CHANCE: RECOGNIZE THE UNSUNG DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM!
The politics of international human rights, democracy, and freedom awards too often resembles the patronage culture of Afghanistan before 2021. Connections bring recognition, publicity attracts more awards, and the same familiar faces are celebrated year after year. Meanwhile, countless courageous activists doing the real work remain invisible simply because they lack influential networks, wealthy sponsors, or PR teams.
Enough of this revolving door of awards and mutual admiration! Give others a chance. Displaced International (DI) calls on international NGOs and award committees to look beyond celebrity activists and recognize grassroots leaders, women, refugees, displaced advocates, and local human rights defenders risking their lives for freedom and human dignity. Reward genuine courage, sacrifice, and measurable impact—not connections, celebrity status, or self-promotion.

Who best qualifies to lead the UN: candidates backed by compromised member states—or someone who has endured geopolitical conflict and demonstrated the independence, experience, and courage to lead?
Major and middle powers across the Global North and South invoke human rights while accommodating repression whenever strategic interests demand it. Afghanistan exposes that hypocrisy.
Trump’s administration negotiated the withdrawal deal with the Taliban. Biden completed the withdrawal and defended his decision as Afghanistan’s elected republic collapsed. Neither deserves a pass. Tolerating Taliban repression means tolerating the conditions that force Afghans to flee—especially women and girls denied education, freedom, and a future.
At Displaced International, we speak for ourselves and let no culprit off the hook. The next Secretary-General should serve “We the peoples”—including those uprooted by the geopolitical bargains of the very powers choosing the UN’s leadership.
