ProPublica documented 519 U.S. citizens detained by immigration agents from January 2025 through Oct. 21, 2026. Each incident required at least two sources, and reporters contacted DHS about every case. The database is almost certainly an undercount because the federal government keeps no comparable record.
More than 100 were held because agents questioned their citizenship. Roughly 300 were detained after accusations of assaulting or impeding officers. Whatever the merits of each case, the public should not have to rely on a newsroom to learn how often federal immigration agents detain Americans.
New: The Trump administration says that “DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake.” But that is precisely what is happening. We've cataloged every case we can find of an immigration agent holding a citizen during the current administration. propub.li/4zgULAj

A federal judge found that an immigration court bond hearing was so egregiously stacked against an ICE detainee that he may simply order the release of ICE detainees, rather than bond hearings, from now on.

ICE has detained this mentally ill US citizen in the Miami Detention Center in Indiana (an immigration prison) b/c he's deluded himself into believing he's the son of a Jamaican Prime Minister, even tho he has a Florida birth certificate. ICE really wants to deport him.

EXCLUSIVE: Trump DOJ’s has repeatedly insisted it will not tell immigration judges how to rule, as required by law.

Read @immcouncil’s statement about today’s terrible 5th Circuit decision.
"This ruling allows the govt to lock people up when detention plainly serves no purpose, and without any way to challenge it,” said Rebecca Cassler, senior litigation attorney at American Immigration Council, who argued the case before the Fifth Circuit.

Mr. Nilaj was ordered removed in 2008, but for whatever reasons, ICE chose to let him stay. 18 years later, after years of dutifully following his release conditions, he was unceremoniously arrested at a check-in — and now his food pantry is shuttered.
Is America greater now?
ICE just locked up the man who feeds 8,000 Bronx neighbors a month, at his own immigration hearing. Now his food pantry is shut.🤬
Aleksander Nilaj, an Albanian immigrant who founded the Open Hand food pantry in the Bronx in 2012, showed up for his immigration hearing at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan. ICE agents detained him instead. He is now held at Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark, New Jersey. bit.ly/4i8Uqse
