"There is little new under the sun ... much of what we must do is to continue repackaging eternal truths for a new context" A wonderful nugget of wisdom from @dhh's reading list.
What I've been reading, as answered to automatic monthly question in our Basecamp.

Chatbot search is a terrible idea, especially in an era in which the web is likely to fill up with vast mountains of AI #bullshit, the frozen gabble of #StochasticParrots: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/34421… 10/

Market fit matters so much, that companies make a lot of money and get a lot of users *despite* their process and practices, NOT BECAUSE OF THEM. I freely admit and accept that.

Vitest pro tip: if you have many test files and they share a lot of common modules, tests actually run faster with --no-threads because it avoids repeated module initialization costs. This made Vue 3 unit tests run 6x faster on CI 🤯

I'll never forget asking a guy who maintained 40yo mainframes for an insurance co why he didn't just migrate the apps. His reply: the firm's actuarial code relies on specific bugs in the mainframe OS's floating-point handling. Run on any other system, it would produce chaos.

Terrific Patreon update about the state of Mastodon. Interesting that 31K/month is enough to cover costs and leave some over for growth. (Reminiscent of arXiv.) Open protocols create even more opportunity. If you're on Mastodon, support your instance and Mastodon central!

Many tech execs or startup founders don’t understand what engineers liked about working at institutions like Bell Labs, PARC, or Google. I don’t expect them to understand.

This is also a reminder that your business only gets more complex *unless* you actively simplify. Most businesses focus on reducing complexity as they grow. What you really need to focus on is *scaling simplicity*. That’s where you start getting exponential gains.
As a general rule, you want to keep your business model as simple as possible. Complexity not only ultimately confuses customers which slows growth down, but it eventually confuses your own strategy over time.

Today I'm releasing an open source project called Webspaces. Webspaces builds 3D worlds *into* the web, using just HTML. Add a <script> tag and an HTML page becomes a 3D world where you can build objects, share content, or hang out. 1/ webspaces.space
