π SPX hits a round number and just stops.
Grinds sideways. Chops you to ribbons.
Then out of nowhere it slices through and accelerates. Five points becomes ten. Ten becomes twenty.
None of that is random.
Here's what's actually moving the tape π§΅
Divide VIX by 16. That's your expected daily SPX move. VIX 16 = roughly 1% day. VIX 32 = roughly 2%.
Write that number down before the open and measure everything against it. When SPX moves more than VIX priced in β that's information. When it moves less β that's information too. π
One reframe. Changes how you read the entire tape. The rest of the framework is in the article.

Most traders look at support and resistance. Price levels. Prior highs. Round numbers. Standard stuff.
Gamma gives you a second, invisible set of levels sitting on top of your chart. And sometimes those matter more than the ones everybody else is watching. πΊοΈ
The difference between a guardrail and an air pocket is not obvious until you know what to look for. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Gamma is a 24-hour map. Time of day is the gravity.
Asia: gravity low. London: gravity medium. New York RTH: gravity high.
Same levels. Same math. Completely different enforcement. The question nobody asks is what that actually means for your entries, your stops, and your read on whether a break is real.
Full breakdown in the free mailbox post. β‘

If you trade ES during Asia or London, you've probably noticed gamma levels sometimes hold clean and sometimes price just wicks right through them.
That's not random. There's a specific mechanical reason the same level behaves like a wall at 10 AM and a suggestion at 2 AM.
A subscriber asked me exactly this. My answer is in the mailbox post. π§

π° THE STORY ROTATES
Earlier this year the story was rates: two cuts and a friendly Fed. That was the story until it wasn't. A December hike is now about three-quarters priced. This week the story was AI, and it'll be the story until it isn't.
The policy will take a legislative session to sort out. The selling took one afternoon.
We crave stories because they make uncertainty feel manageable. Taleb called it the narrative fallacy: we're wired to find patterns, even where there aren't any. A 4% day feels like it has to mean something. The lizard brain goes looking for a reason, and the headline is right there waiting.
Markets are a complex system. They look impossibly complicated, but their behavior usually comes down to a handful of deep parameters.
Headlines explain a move after it happens. The move itself comes from the plumbing: market makers forced to hedge the options book, leveraged ETFs rebalancing into the close, trend-following funds, risk managers cutting exposure, and leverage, too much of it, all pointed the same way. Mechanical flows and systematic strategies. Algos playing chess with each other.
Use the story. Don't worship it. I dug into why our brains do this in Just Six Constants for Traders.
If you don't know where the flows are, you're not analyzing markets. You're narrating them.
"Let one drift too far, and the system destabilizes fast."
That line is about the universe. Rees wrote it about physics.
I use it every morning before I touch the keyboard. Because it's also the most accurate description of why disciplined traders still blow up that I've ever read. The full context is in the article. π

VIX divided by 16.
That's it. That single calculation tells you the expected daily SPX move before the open. VIX 16 = roughly 1% day. VIX 32 = roughly 2%.
Write that number down every morning and measure everything against it. When SPX moves more than VIX priced in, that's information. When it moves less, that's information too. The full framework is in the article. π§

Doc aka Trader McGraw retweeted
I can guarantee you that during every major market drawdown, people said the same thing: βThis time is different. You just donβt understand.β
And every single time, a year later, the market was trading at much higher prices.
Most traders hear 'negative gamma' and assume it means dealers are short puts β institutions buying protection, dealers selling it, dealers short gamma on the downside.
GameStop proved that assumption wrong in the most expensive way possible. The acceleration ran the other direction entirely, and the mechanics were identical.
Part 2 of the series explains exactly why β and what it means for which way you expect the move to run. π§

π¨ NEW SPX 0DTE DAILY PLAN β FRIDAY 11/6
π The Selloff Found the Summer Floor. Now Comes the Jobs Report.
Thursday's 4.4% collapse wasn't just about AI and semiconductors. Systematic funds, leveraged ETFs, and forced liquidation helped turn a selloff into a rout.
But forced selling eventually ends. Conviction selling is another story.
Overnight, SPX tested 7,300, bounced toward 7,400, and stalled. Now payrolls will test whether that floor has legs.
π THE KEY LEVELS
7,400 β Synthetic upside gate
7,355 β Thursday's closing pivot
7,325 β 200-day moving average
7,300 β Summer double bottom
7,245 β JPM December put / last catch
7,200 β Downside trapdoor
𧲠Negative gamma means fast moves through positioning gaps. Above 7,400, watch 7,450β7,485. Below 7,300, the JPM puts come into play.
π‘οΈ VIX9D versus VIX may tell us whether the hedging pressure is easing or another wave is coming.
π° 0DTE premium sellers: Rich premiums, dangerous conditions. Today's plan includes my Triple Play credit-spread setups, gamma positioning, and complete IF/THEN Road Map.
The question isn't whether the market can bounce. It's whether buyers can hold what they reclaim.

Vix - VIX9D: Weekly
Looking at the Z-score middle panel this is about as close to flushed as we can get
COVID and the tariff tantrum are rivals
Every morning, one question should hit your checklist before anything else.
Not where is the market going. That question is mostly noise.
The question that actually pays is different β and once you build your pre-market routine around it, the way you size, structure, and trust breakouts changes completely. 60 seconds. One sentence. That's the whole workflow. β‘

SPX hits a round number and just stops. Grinds sideways. Chops you to ribbons. Then out of nowhere it slices through and runs 20 points like someone kicked a hornet's nest.
For years I thought that was random. It isn't.
It isn't the Fed. It isn't earnings. It isn't whatever the suit on TV is yelling about at 9:28.
The article names the actual force behind every one of those moves. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. π
docmcgraw.substack.com/p/howβ¦
GameStop. Retail piled into calls. Dealers sold those calls. Dealers were short gamma on the upside.
As GME ripped, dealer delta went up. To stay neutral they bought more shares. That buying accelerated the squeeze. More buying, higher delta, more buying.
Most traders still think negative gamma only runs on the put side. That assumption is exactly what gets them hurt.
The article explains where the acceleration actually comes from β and it isn't where most people think. π§
