How do we bring India’s voices home? In his article for @NewIndianXpress, Dr Vikram Sampath explores India’s rich sonic heritage and the early recordings of Indian voices preserved in archives across Europe. He reflects on the importance of preserving, digitising and connecting these scattered sound archives, and on how technology can make India’s sonic heritage accessible to researchers, musicians and future generations. The article also highlights the Archive of Indian Music (AIM), established by Dr Sampath in 2011 to rescue, preserve and digitise India’s early gramophone recordings. Many of these recordings are now freely accessible on SoundCloud.
