Introducing Arete-27B: Qwen3.8-27B, post-trained to reinforce Western values. Chinese open models are currently the strongest available, but they ship with state-aligned behavior in the weights. We built an 803-prompt eval across seven value categories, including freedom of expression, democracy, and privacy, and measured how often a model adopts China’s party line. After fine-tuning on roughly 53 million tokens, Arete-27B's propaganda rate fell from 22% to 1%, in line with the Western models we tested. Its Hermes Bench score shows no significant performance tradeoffs. The values in an open model are one fine-tune away. Our eval, weights, and training data are available now along with the full blog post: nousresearch.com/arete

nousresearch.com/arete

Step 1: take Chinese open model Step 2: anyone completely free to change it to fit any bias whatsoever Step 3: ??? Step 4: OMG look at this CCP propaganda censorship
A lot of people are mocking "Western values" without reading the blog post. What Nous actually did is simple: They took a Qwen3.8-27B that gives CCP talking points on sensitive topics, fine-tuned it on ~50k human-checked examples, and that behavior went away. CCP propaganda answers went 22% to 1%. Please read before posting.

Real shocker Bill Nelson isn’t in the senate anymore as it appears his former aide isn’t familiar with progressive taxation. You raise taxes on the properties without homestead exemptions.
a whole lot of poor folks in florida thought they were going to get a tax break for something they don’t have - now, it’s going to end their cities, threaten emergency responder access, etc.

That would expose the tariff hustle so don’t bet on Democrats doing anything.
Micron benefitted from the memory chip price surge and reported making over $99 billion in its fiscal 2026 It looks to have set aside $260m to pay US federal corporate income tax, and over $14b to pay income ta abroad -- primarily in Singapore 1/2

Congratulations on finding the one town of 820 people in America where data centers didn't get blown out at the ballot box this week while voters across Maine, Illinois, Kansas, and Wisconsin passed bans and moratoriums across the board.  Now look at what you left out about Harwood: 1. Applied Digital ($APLD) already broke ground on that $3B campus over a year ago after Mayor Hankey had sheriff's deputies escort protesters out of the room and rammed the zoning vote through in under 30 minutes without public comment. 2. Bragging about $1.65M in property taxes on a $3 BILLION facility means they are paying an effective tax rate of 0.055%—about 20x lower than the tax rate a normal North Dakota family pays on their house.
🚨 Harwood, North Dakota: Voters overwhelmingly REJECTED new restrictions targeting data centers. The town of just 820 people expects $1.65 MILLION in property tax revenue by 2028, plus 200+ permanent jobs. Harwood's Mayor: “I'm personally very happy to have the data center.”

"Just 4 percent of the increase" only works if you average states with no data centers to hide the local looting. The exact same Harvard/Penn study proves a standard hyperscale site adds 34MW to the summer peak, forcing $11.6 million in local grid upgrades that utilities then pass onto households. The study found that a standard cluster of ten data centers hikes local residential bills by 13%, and drives 15% of the total increase in high-density areas. As for "bills rising where demand grew least" (like the Northeast)—those grids are aging and natural-gas dependent. But look at the cheap-power states (Nebraska/Virginia): they flooded them with data centers, their commercial load exploded by 65%-83%, and household rates shot up 19%-40%, destroying their historically low rates to subsidize Server Alley. No amount of academic spin changes the fact that regular families are paying for corporate grid expansions.
.@washingtonpost reports a new joint Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania study finding data centers have "only a small effect on residential electricity prices." Data centers were responsible for "just 4 percent of the utility rate increases over the last five years." **Weak Connection Between Data Centers & Overall Electricity Prices** "Multiple studies by different researchers and organizations have failed to find a strong connection between data centers and the overall trajectory of U.S. electricity prices in recent years." archive.is/20261106122720/ht…

Now check the public utility receipts for Loudoun County and Virginia ratepayers who actually have to power those 230 buildings:  1. Direct Rate Hikes: NOVEC (which serves Loudoun) just hiked residential bills another $13/month on Nov 1, and Dominion Energy pushed through a $16/month hike for 2026 after requesting a 15% rate increase to help fund a $50.1B grid expansion driven almost entirely by data centers. 2. 833% Capacity Spike: PJM wholesale grid capacity prices jumped 833% for 2025–2026, with data centers driving 63% ($9.3B) of the cost and leaving Virginia's Dominion zone with 65% higher capacity fees than the rest of the grid. 3. State Audit (JLARC): Virginia's own legislative audit found data centers are driving residential bills up by up to $37/month ($444/yr) while taking nearly $1 billion/year in state sales tax exemptions on their servers. 78% of Virginia voters now blame data centers for exploding utility bills, sparking 60+ bills in Richmond this year just to stop the cost-shifting.
Data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia: “We get $1.2 billion a year in local tax revenue, about 40% of all of our tax revenue...on 3% of our land” Buddy Rizer, the county's economic development chief, explained how “data center alley” grew: “We would have never looked at having 55 million square feet of data center, 230-some buildings. That was not the plan. The plan was to utilize the fiber loop, the internet exchange, to utilize a reclaimed water line, and buildings that were already built. That was the plan, right? And so that made a lot of sense.” “But, you know, fast forward, today we are largely dependent on that. We get $1.2 billion a year in local tax revenue, about 40% of all of our tax revenue. And while that looks overwhelming, data centers take only about 3% of all of our land in the county. So it’s quite a return on investment. You know, 40%, $1.2 billion, on 3% of our land.”

Same energy.
Elon Musk says the lack of popularity for data centers is temporary because of the prosperity that is brought by them: "The lack of popularity is where there aren't data centers and they think a data center will have a bad effect. Memphis is booming because of @SpaceX. The restaurants are full, the hotels are full, we're paying twice the prevailing wage people were earning before. We've also helped local schools. And the tax revenue the county and city are earnings is tremendous. I think this popularity thing is a temporary concern because there actually is tremendous prosperity that is brought by the data centers. Talk to the people in town and they feel it because their businesses are booming." (via 33rd Annual Baron Investment Conference today in NYC)

"Zero water or electricity issue"? The Mississippi DEQ just slammed them with multiple violations because they started major construction with no stormwater or water permits, generating fugitive dust and stormwater erosion. The "contained noise" is so loud that thousands of nearby residents are currently suing over 24/7 noise that sounds like "a hovering jet engine" that won't go away, forcing SpaceX's shell company MZX to go door-to-door offering to buy out 418 homes if they agree to stay out of the class-action. And putting thousands of out-of-state contract workers in "moter trailers" is because they couldn't hire locally. Spending $5M on schools is 0.02% of their $20B regional build—it's pocket-change PR to cover up 27 unpermitted gas turbines running 24/7 with zero environmental scrubbers. It's a massive environmental and legal liability, not a boom.
A have a Data Center in our County in Mississippi. Zero water or Electricity issue. Way over a Thousand workers on site, staying in our Motels and the Company even brought in Trailers for the workers. They just poured 5 mil into our Schools, Business are springing up all around it to catch the over 1,000 workers coming in and they are providing free College training for their workers. City is booming financially.
