The absolute joy of seeing in-person for the very first time one of my favourite paintings: “The Money Changer and his Wife”, painted in 1514 by Quentin METSYS (on display at the #Louvre in Paris). As an economic historian and feminist, this is a painting filled with so much meaning. To begin with, it depicts a married couple occupying equal space on the canvas, which, given that women are not always equally represented in art (whether or not they are can, of course, reveal a lot about a particular society), always puts an instant smile on my face. It was painted during the Flemish Renaissance which, economically speaking, marked the start of an era in which the European axis of economic power shifted away from the Mediterranean towards the Atlantic coastline, something which placed Netherlands and Belgium at the heart of Europe’s economic growth. Of related significance is that while the central economic role is assigned to the husband (as the Money Changer), the wife’s influence is not entirely disregarded. Given how much wives have contributed to family businesses throughout history, this is important. Note, though, that the wife is depicted with her hand on a religious text while (apparently) being “distracted” by the counting of money. It is a sign not only of how women were assigned “pious” roles but also of the (supposed) conflict between money and morality. Taken together, this is a painting that offers so many talking points, all of which are highly relevant to my work as an economic historian. While it might not be as famous as the Mona Lisa (on display at the same gallery) at least there are no crowds to block your view. #econhist #economica

I’m absolutely thrilled that the special issue of Essays in Economic and Business History on Administrative Practices and Resource Management of Ruling Women in Premodern Europe edited by Katia Wright, Cathleen Sarti and Charlotte Backerra has now been published. I contributed an article called ‘The Queen as Lady of the Manor: The Economic Agency of the Tudor Queen Consorts in Relation to their Manorial Interests’. It’s also an open access journal and you can read it for free online. #queensbusiness #tudorqueen #tudorqueenship #henryviii

“The relationship between the law of contract and the law of unjust enrichment has long perplexed courts and commentators. In considering the relationship afresh, I want to consider several leading cases including a Supreme Court case in which, along with Lord Leggatt, I dissented, namely Barton v Morris.” Lord Burrows delivered a paper entitled ‘The Relationship between Contract and Unjust Enrichment’ at the Heart of Equity conference held at @ucl to mark the retirement (as a full-time Professor) of Charles Mitchell. The full paper can be read on Lord Burrows’s biography page on the Court’s website: supremecourt.uk/justices/lor…

JRR Tolkien is one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century. Next spring we'll be dedicating a new memorial to him in Poets' Corner, close to monuments to other literary greats including his friend CS Lewis. Known to millions around the world as the author of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, Tolkien spent most of his life as a distinguished academic at Oxford University, where he taught Old and Middle English, and Old Norse. Outside his academic life he created fantasy books, children's stories, poetry and illustrations, as well as inventing languages and alphabets.

Its publication day 🥳 Jane Seymour: Patronage, Material Culture and Image Crafting is finally out in the wild, published by @routledgebooks To write the book, I went back to the archives, trying to build up an evidence-based picture of this elusive queen. You’ll find a new birth year (she’s several years younger than usually supposed), details about her relationship with Henry, her stepdaughters and her birth family, as well as her political role, household, finances and religion. I also look at her memorialisation, both official and unofficial. Jane’s material culture is a big part of the book, looking at her dress, items she owned and other items with a connection to her. It was such an opportunity to write this book and finally put the myth of ‘Plain’ Jane Seymour to bed. #janeseymour #queenjaneseymour #queenship #tudor #livesofroyalwomen

Look what was waiting for me when I got home from Serbia this afternoon 😀 Jane Seymour: Patronage, Material Culture and Image Crafting. I was so thrilled to be given the opportunity to contribute to @routledgebooks wonderful Lives of Royal Women series. I spent a huge amount of time in the archives on Jane to try to reconstruct what survives of her life and queenship. There are definitely quite a few surprises in the book. #janeseymour #queenjaneseymour #mybook #mynewbook
