The fall of U.S. preeminence is well underway. The world can no longer count on our post-WWII leadership in science, engineering, innovation, and public health. In the name of "putting America first," we’ve abdicated our global role—leaving a vacuum for China and others to fill.

One of the great joys of a life in science is when research you know well turn up in the media. Anyone who’s taken a biology (or chemistry) course from me may remember my lecture on Jack Corliss’s 1977 expedition to the bottom of the ocean, and the astonishing world he found there: hydrothermal vents teeming with life that runs on chemistry instead of sunlight. Today on National Public Radio I heard a BBC interview with Robert Ballard, who was part of that expedition. I didn’t cry, except at the end, when he said an expedition isn’t over until you come back and share what you learned with the community. Amen, brother!

Imagine paying $2000 a month for a grocery membership. Then imagine going to the supermarket, filling your cart, and discovering at checkout that you still owe $300. Three months later, another bill arrives. Apparently, the person who stocked the produce wasn’t part of your grocery network. And the milk? Your membership covers milk, but only if you buy it at a different store. You call to ask why. After 45 minutes on hold, someone explains that you should have obtained prior authorization before buying the groceries. And next year, your membership goes up to $2500 a month. Nobody would tolerate this way of buying groceries. But somehow, we’ve come to accept it as a reasonable way to pay for healthcare.

There is reason to think that the right-wing think tank the Center for Renewing America is building dossiers for candidates they disapprove of. Then, on the day new members are sworn in, stooges for the OCR will object to administering the oath of office to newly elected candidates, citing material in these false dossiers to claim that these members cannot be trusted to take the oath. These lunatics want to disenfranchise the voters. We must be ready to fight against these evildoers.

On October 6, the Center for Renewing America, a right-wing think tank, published a step-by-step plan for keeping certain newly elected members of Congress from being sworn in. It urges House leaders and allied members to compile files on targeted members-elect before the new Congress convenes on January 3. When the Speaker calls the new members forward to take the oath, an ally would object, the targeted member would be told to stand aside, and the House would vote on whether that person can sincerely take the oath. A majority vote could then exclude the member and declare the seat vacant, getting around the two-thirds vote the Constitution requires to expel a sitting member. The primer is open about whom it has in mind, but I think they try this with anyone they disagree with. This is a plan to let partisan lunatics overrule the voters, and we need to be ready to fight it.

And so it begins: Trump's Dept of "Justice" is preemptively challenging the results of Alaska's election if the Republican incumbent loses. They are doing so 11 days BEFORE the election. I expect that this is the first of what will be many crooked attempts to overturn the 2026 election. How sad to see the evildoer and his legion of accomplices trying to disrupt the election.. wapo.st/4yH53su

Trump: All those people who said "Russia, Russia, Russia" about me need to be charged with high crimes and jailed, and, in the meantime, I'm pleased to sign this executive order waiving sanctions against Russia...

As a bioethicist and agnostic, I've been on the opposite side of various issues with Catholics, but I definitely respect their consistency. Oddly enough, I've often found myself in agreement with them. Like them, I certainly frown on livestreaming an execution.

If you are a law-abiding citizen of the United States, do not ever be the only person in a room alone with Pete Hegseth. If you meet him in a dark alley, you have to make a split-second decision: run for your life, or stand and possibly have to fend off the evildoer.

Come November 3, no matter how many obstacles Trump puts into my path, how many lines are lengthened, how many rules are rewritten, or how many intimidators are posted in front of the doors, I am walking into the polling place and casting my ballot. If that means staring down masked goons or whoever is sent to scare people away then so be it. Trump will not prevent me from casting my vote!

Last night, Jack Smith opened this year's Colorado Speaker Series at the Denver Convention Center. What an amazing career! His speech focused, as expected, on the rule of law and how the current DOJ is ignoring it at Trump's command. But he also expressed his support for non-partisan government employees who care about our country and have pledged their lives to work for us. And the need for more young people to take up the call. It was an optimistic message for the future that brought a rousing standing ovation.

Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth today announced the the firing squad execution of a condemned murderer will be livestreamed. Hegseth is proud to stand alongside despots from Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, and others who have carried out public executions. Unlike the Taliban and ISIS Hegseth would never stoop so low as to use filmed executions as propaganda.

The United States is not a nation “whose God is the Lord.” It is a nation whose Constitution protects Christians, atheists, and everyone else equally. The Pentagon answers to the Constitution, not the Book of Psalms.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. — Psalm 33:12
