While watching Oregon on television from the couch, then-Texas RB CJ Baxter noticed that offensive coordinator Will Stein used running backs in a unique way. That intrigued him. When Stein became the head coach at Kentucky, Baxter followed. And for the first time in a long time he’s starting to feel dominant again.
As a sophomore at Texas in 2024 Baxter suffered a catastrophic knee injury, and he believed he never regained his previous form.
Baxter told me this week he was lost physically and emotionally in the aftermath, alone and listless. His dad taught him a lasting lesson just then: I'm gonna let you sit in this hurt alone sometimes.
Because there will be times in life when you face adversity, and you need to know how to get through it. CJ didn't understand it at first, but now he believes that lesson has recalibrated his mental and emotional toughness.
Now he leads Kentucky in touchdowns.
