we have 3 AirBnB units, a family cabin we rent out when we aren’t using it and two basement units
people stay in the rural cabin because we have something they want, beautiful vacation property in an excellent location, we have many return customers and people are generally wildly polite and leave it very clean because they want to be allowed to come back, we mostly tell people what not to do (please don’t strip the beds) but do ask them to run the dishwasher if they have time, though it’s not something we worry much about either way, it’s helpful for same day turnover but not critical, and it’s frequently booked back to back even in the off season
the basement units are two bed, two bath with kitchen and laundry and cost about as much as a single 2 star hotel room does nightly, I don’t even know if we have checkout procedures for them honestly, it’s never been a concern
The cleaning fee is the only option to make a short stay economical from our side. It should rightly be called a base rate or something similar as it has nothing to do with cleaning, $50 pays for very little cleaning.
I don’t really understand all the bitching and moaning from either side. I rent a lot of airbnbs too and never encountered anything unreasonable. We’ve had a few shitty guests, but it’s maybe 3-5% that are bad and 1 in 100 that’s truly terrible.
Maybe it’s different elsewhere, but price wise you can’t compare a hotel room to even our basement airbnb units. You’d have to rent two hotel rooms for twice the price and you still wouldn’t have a kitchen and laundry. The cabin is unique, you’d struggle to find anything similar for rent in that area.
We’re always busy at all three. And we make some money. But anyone telling you AirBnB is some sort of cash cow is either smarter than me or lying to you.

re: airbnb discourse
in college I worked as a server at an upscale steakhouse. we had a few different steak sauces that were made from scratch daily. they were expensive to make, and less than half of the customers that ordered steak wanted sauce, so the restaurant charged $3 for it
we got complaints constantly. just at my own tables, half a dozen times a week I'd get complaints about being "nickel and dimed" for $3 of sauce on a $70 steak. a few times a month someone would mention it in an angry online review, or ask to speak to a manager and demand that it be removed from the bill because "who the hell charges for condiments?"
after several years of this, finally management had enough. they raised the price of every steak by $3, and now complimentary sauce was included with each steak on request. want to hazard a guess about how many customers complained about the $3 price increase on steak? essentially zero.
it was great, from the restaurants perspective! no more complaints, and instead of making $3 on 40% of steak orderers, they made $3 on all of them. and the customers were much happier, despite this deal being absolutely, unequivocally worse for them.
consumers are not rational agents from microeconomics textbooks. very often the *feeling* of what they're being charged for matters way more than the absolute value of what they're being charged. I think that's more or less what happening with airbnb. people don't want to be charged a cleaning fee and then also told they have to clean, even if in the counterfactual world the additional cleaning fee is more than they'd be willing to pay someone to do the required cleaning. a $100 cleaning fee *feels* better than a $50 cleaning fee + "load the dishwasher and take the trash out to the dumpster", even though most people would not pay $50 to not have to do that.

I think a lot of you are misunderstanding the frustration. what's annoying is paying a cleaning fee and then being asked to clean. it feels like double dipping. it may be illogical, but you'd get less complaints about "$100 fee but you don't have to do anything" versus "$50 fee + load the dishwasher"

Lorne Doerkson, a backbench MLA, gets a call in the Amsterdam airport on a layover from South Africa.
“The party leader has resigned and you’re the only MLA most of us don’t hate. You’ve been elected the next leader. Do you accept?”
34 days later: “Tonight, BC made a choice, and it is going to be the honour of my lifetime to serve you as your Premier,”
How to play 4D chess like @LDoerkson:
1. Go to Africa.
2. Let your party implode.
3. Return as leader.
4. Let David Eby call an election.
5. Become Premier.

Congrats to @LDoerkson, on a sweeping victory and the next premier of BC!
If you don’t know who Lorne is or what he stands for I had the pleasure of interviewing him in depth before the election.

I'm not sure a single thing he said here is correct.
I'm very bullish on this win, but it's absolutely nothing like California electing Republicans in a landslide.

It really is fascinating how well Indian-Americans score on metrics that are self-reported (like household income) while doing much worse on metrics where the data is centrally collected.

Indian immigrant hate on the right (which I am) is so ridiculous. These are generally higher class people. When I was doing immigration law it was like Indian dudes making 400k a year running oil plants. These aren't British Indians (actually poor people from Bangladesh)
For anyone wondering, yes, it does.

a veritable nobody less than two months ago, what a victory speech tonight
I’m drinking a victory Caesar in his riding tonight. He was the forest fire update guy when we were fighting the fires this summer, now he’s in charge of the whole damn thing.

Voting today for the Conservative candidate in my riding. I am comforted my town voted overwhelmingly for a Conservative Mayor (Dr. Paul Dhillon), Powell River voted out all the Woke Town-Name-Changers, the man fired for defending the name Powell River was elected.

The story of the BC Conservatives rise to power is one of the most insane political stories I have ever witnessed. They threw their leader out like six weeks ago.
