In a very unexpected twist
My web-based port of Quake 1 (powered by FTE) at q1.pieter.com has become one of the most popular servers in the QuakeWorld community
@dsvensson messaged me and asked me to add some missing features like WebRTC and QTV so people can watch the games online:
"Your server raised many questions in the small community when it started showing up. :)"
"A new server showed up on the hub and, while small, the community is very active with tournaments, LANs etc, and hub is a gathering place to see what's up for the evening, then your server showed up there full every day with complete newbies and people started talking about what it might be, until the url to the web page was eventually found. "
"Lots of people have been talking about your server, would be amazing if at least some of the people your server attracts gets introduced to competitive play."
You can watch the live games here hub.quakeworld.nu/qtv/?addre…
Maybe we should organize a tournament? 🏟️
💾 Two years ago I started working on these crazy nostalgia projects, kind of randomly, because I was bored and wanted to do something different than just build another SaaS or AI app/website
I wanted to try to run Windows 3.1 inside a web browser, and to do that properly already took me months
When that worked well enough, I wanted to build a dial up internet connection so it could browse the web, with the basic levels of AI back then, that was VERY hard, and I'd just go around in circles forever. Finally I had to find the only person in the world who got that working @bai0 and beg him to help me make it work, and we did it!
Then I started hosting classic games like Quake with full multiplayer, porting them to WASM, or if not already like Quake III by @lukathedev and hosting those with a full multiplayer server ready-to-go in your browser
And then I spent 6 months trying to reverse engineer Windows XP to run on v86 by @copy_sh, very difficult (because it's so big) and only possible because modern AI like Opus 5.5 is good enough to figure that out
For the last two years pretty much nobody cared about any of these projects, I'd tweet them into the void, which was fine because I thought it was very fun just for myself
But now with this wave of AI-assisted reverse engineering WASM ports of games and apps to web they're finally taking off, pretty much anything is portable to WASM on web now, and if you add server to it via WebSockets, people can instantly play with each other, or interact inside apps you host, it's super cool
Every game and app I have on @pieter now is full or almost full to the limit, yesterday 80,000 people played around in Windows 3.1 or Windows XP inside their browsers chatting to MSN and AOL Messenger AI bots and playing 3D Pinball or playing Quake etc.
And that was my idea for @pieter: a non-commercial preservation project, kinda like an online computer museum but interactive!
The most cool thing to pay respects to these old games, apps and OSes I think is to keep them alive by making them easily and freely accessible, playable on mobile so old and new generations of people can jump back in the past interactively
This is one of my first projects to take off that does not, can not and will not make money because it's non-profit, and that's fine
Every time I tweeted about these projects would always ask me "but why?"
Because it's really fun! 🤩
"From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans, not for people who don't exist."
Seems like was a tragedy after all... 😭
I can finally talk about Mass Effect Universe.
Since Bioware closed I can now reveal that I was part of the Mass Effect Council, saw what BioWare was building, and provided feedback during development.
• Set 600+ years after the Reaper War
• You play as a customizable N7 agent
• Instead of being a walking gun rack, you're a cross between John Wick and James Bond
• Shepard's legacy preserved, regardless of your ending
• A galaxy divided into three major factions
• Humanity, Krogan, Batarians, and more allied together
• Council races forming their own alliance
• The Geth emerging as a third superpower
• A galactic Cold War instead of another Reaper style invasion with a shadowy adversary
• Geth-built megastructures
• Connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda
• Experimental technology implanted in you as a unique point of difference
• Hacking and manipulating the environment
• See through walls, identify systems, remotely trigger hazards and more
• Handcrafted missions like ME1-3
• But with Hitman-style freedom in how you complete them
• Brutal close-range executions
• Squadmates who can clash with each other
• Romance wasn't being sanitised
• Liara returns - now an incredibly powerful Asari Matriarch
From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans, not for people who don't exist.
It looked incredible.
And now we may never get to play it.

Can't let WoW Forever have all the volumetric fog. Baked and cached on map load in my upcoming client. Unfortunately looks like garbage on maps made by mappers who don't model light sources, who just sprinkles out light entities mid air so it probably needs some opt-in thingie. #quake #quakeworld

A couple of years ago I got into Quake map making, and it's been frustrating to see my GPU sit idle while my CPU cores heat the room by multiple degrees. Last year I did a proof of concept that did work, but I never took it to conclusion until this spring.
While it does have a headless baker, it also contains a preview application that bakes what's in view for fast feedback to be able to iterate fast.
One of the drivers behind this is that I think that excellent mappers settle with worse lighting than what they can, because they cannot wait for yet another bake.
Another driver is to have a solid library to integrate into an engine for generating directional lightgrid on first map load, as such data is too big to write to a BSPX lump while keeping QuakeWorld download speeds sane.
The code is written in Rust, with great success of using Rust-GPU to also write shaders in Rust. It's not completely done yet but hopefully by sharing this, I'll pressure myself to finish it in a not too distant future. Just some more code cleanup and some minor bugs to fix.
The result is not completely matching ericw-tools, but it's close enough for it to be valuable to iterate on lighting.
By only rebaking surfaces in render scope when changing settings makes tweaking lighting in larger maps feasible. Indirect lighting is limited to one bounce for preview, but is configurable.
Apply rebakes all surfaces and all their styled layers. Again, with QuakeWorld in mind, styled layers is limited to at most the original four.
Together with @grok 4 I managed to produce an algorithm that generates Quake 1's anorms.h normals in the same original order it needs to be. This GPLv2 array has been been copied to countless projects over the years, but can now be generated.

Would be wild if @ID_AA_Carmack could explain what the original code looked like in contrast to what I came up with. The iteration order is very weird.
New year, new🤖 ... this time a constexpr version, gist.github.com/dsvensson/87… still pointless, but fun!
Currently hacking on a Vulkan based lightmap baker, but not today as I'm traveling with my MacBook that doesn't do Vulkan. So an hour ago I asked Claude what mesa's kosmickrisp Vulkan to Metal layer lacks and told it to fix it and pointed it to the Vulkan examples repo to try it out with. Might get something done after all. #kosmickrisp #mesa #vulkan
22 years ago I setup my first 6bone based IPv6 tunnel, a few years later moved on to a Hurricane Electric tunnel, keeping the hope alive of some day having native IPv6 on my fixed network, and this week, the wait is finally over @BahnhofAB ❤️
Recently talked about this with some friends too. Open-source used to be about building cool stuff in the name of digital freedom, and, by doing so, climbing the meritocratic ladder within some project of interest. Occasional flamewars about code and commit style. Simple times.
I stand with @dhh because they’ll come for me next. Eventually they’ll come for you, too.
It’s time we put our feet down and say “no” to these losers who demand everyone share their exact opinions or get smeared, fired, etc.
Let’s usher in a new era of OSS: one where everyone is welcome, and nobody tells other people what they must think and say.

This is a wonderful book challenge.
Book challenge
I appreciate that there are many people who roll their eyes at my optimistic-libertarian-technological-triumphalist take on things, yet still interact civilly. I have had several meaningful conversations here, but the bandwidth is limited.
If you are one of those people, suggest a book for me to read that you think will challenge my worldview. I will read it with an open mind and make some posts reacting to it. In return you will do the same for @johanknorberg ‘s The Capitalist Manifesto.
Volunteer yourself and a book here. I will pick a few and run a poll tomorrow.
