Our campaign is about generational renewal. It’s about change. But we’re not seeking change for change’s sake. We’re working to reform and grow the OLP to protect and build on the proud legacies of our party. A legacy of leadership on climate action. A legacy of leadership on healthcare. And, most importantly, a legacy of leadership on publicly funded education. Gerard Kennedy was one of the architects of Ontario’s global leadership in education. He set us on a path toward genuine partnership with teachers, smaller class sizes, more supports for students, higher test scores, and higher graduation rates. An entire generation of students, teachers, and parents owes Gerard a debt of gratitude. I firmly believe publicly funded education must be the number one priority of every Premier, now and always. I’m determined to build an Ontario Liberal Party that leads on this issue again. That’s why I’m so grateful to have Gerard’s support. He’s challenged our team to dig deep and think big on education. It’s an honest statement of what we believe and where we think Ontario needs to go to keep us safe and to grow our economy. It is here, and Ontarians are paying for it with flooded basements, increased business costs, wildfire smoke and related illness, heat waves, damaged roads, and rising insurance premiums and reduced coverage. Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office projects that, without significant adaptation measures, climate hazards will add $4.1 billion a year on average to the cost of maintaining municipal and provincial infrastructure across Ontario.
